Types of Ear Piercings
June 19th 2008 14:53
Along with navel piercings, ear piercings are probably another of the more popular piercing amongst anyone of any age and any gender. There are so many different noks and crannies on your ear, which means that they can all be pierced.
Ears are generally pretty easy to heal, especially in the lobe area. The average healing rate is about 6-10 weeks, and cartlidge piercings taking a little longer.
To heal an ear piercing, you want to clean it with saline solution twice a day, soaking it for about 10-15 minutes. The longer you have the piercing, you can go to cleaning once a day. I'd give it at bare minimum 2 weeks before reducing the number of times you clean the piercing in one day. Just make sure not to over clean, as you can dry out the piercing and irritate it.
Now, as for the different types of ear piercings, the basic ones include:
* Lobe
* Horizontal Lobe (Transverse Lobe)
* Orbital
* Industrial
* Conch (Inner and Outer)
* Daith
* Helix
* Rook
* Snug
* Tragus
* Anti-Tragus

When you're older you can generally take them out but you will still have scars.
Take it from someone who made the same mistake.
Stop trying to grow up so fast.
You're too young chill out for a while.
I'm 20 years old and attending college with 6 tattoos and 12 piercings.
If you're going to get piercings like an adult then grow up.
Figure out what you want to do with your life before you create new holes in your body.

Anonymous2, you have great advice. I agree that it's ridiculous for parents to let children have certain piercings. I'd say under 16-17, one should only have lob piercings and maybe navel, but at 13, there's no way my child will have anything other than lobes.

it really only hurts when i touch it now.
it has been a while since i got my lobes done, but if i remember correctly, the actual piercing of the cartilage hurts more but the healing is about the same, cartilage a bit more.

I only have my lobes and belly button now.
I only want my tongue done and then stop for awhile.
I had some people tell me that it will hurt really bad because I'm so young and my tongue is too thick? But I have a high pain tolerance. So, will it hurt?

You're young, give it time to figure out what you want. These can create small scars in your face if you take them out. You'll always have a small hole there, even if it's closed. There is generally a small hole/scar left behind.

I don't know what to get next. Either the industrial or the rook.
I am afraid I'll get one that doesn't suit my ear though.
I've already got my right cartilage pierced.

I agree with anonymous 2.
I'm 13 too, but i wouldn't dream of getting a navel or nose piercing.
I do want a second lobe piercing though, but i'm not allowed to get one because my mother keeps telling me it wouldn't look right. ._.
Is that really true..?
i don't really think this is too good a reason, since there's this 11 yr old 3 foot something girl in my school that has a second one and it doesn't really look any different..
But i'm not trying to say i want it because she has it.
because that's not the case.
Can someone help me try and reason with her though?

Hip piercings are surface piercings. They have a 99.9% rejection rate. They are not recommended as permanent piercings. They are generally just a waste of money because of the location and the type of piercing is going to reject. Consider microdermal implants in that area instead; just remember that if you decided to have them removed it's more of a procedure as your skin pretty much grows through the base to create a more permanent body modification.

I'm thinking 2 more in 1 lobe, 1 more in the other lobe, 1 tragus, and either 1 helix or 1 upper cartilage in the opposite ear to the tragus.
If anyone know generally how much this would cost, and in what dollars (i'm in Aus, so i'll probs have to convert it) And do you think that would look alright on a chick?
Also, i'm not sure of my pain tolerance, because i got the lobes done when i was 7, but how much, on a scale of 1 to 10 would this all hurt?
Thanks

Also, if it looks good will depend on what you like. Personally, having them uneven, would drive me nuts and would look silly. But, I'm also a little OCD. I have 6 piercing per ear and each ear is identical to the other; that is just my preference- symmetry.

Have you tried a different jewelry for your lobes? You may have an allergy to the metal they're using.

I've done some research but would feel better if anyone who has had it pierced could tell me what its like to clean,sleep on, time you kept it in to heal etc..
Also, do you think it looks better as a bar or small ring?
At the moment i only have my lobes, 1 cartilage and one on the side and this will probably be the last piercing.
Thanks

The cost will vary on where you live and the shop's rules. It may cost between 35-45 for one. Sometimes if you get both done, they may cut a deal and knock off a few bucks

Anonymous, Cartilage generally does hurt a little more than lobes. Needle is safer than guns for many reasons.
The most basic include:
1. guns cannot be properly cleaned, and you can get bacteria in your new piercing right off the bat. Plus other people's "cooties" ha
2. The jewelry is a blunt force which cause more trauma being shoved in your body.
Piercing guns are not safe for any type of piercing

All cartilage piercings will have some degree of pain. For example, lobe and lip piercings will hurt less than septum and cartilage piercings.

The only thing i have is two lobe piercings.
I want to get my tongue pieced but im afraid it will hurt too bad. I had a helix piercing for three weeks but took it out cos it was always painful.
Is a tongue piercing alot more painful than the cartilage?

Both before I was 13 (except tragus)
The Tragus by far is the worst piercing pain i have so far encountered.
I am 18 now and going to get scaffolding done (industrial if your in America) on friday. Ive heard that hurts a great deal... what are your thoughts on the pain? Also Im getting a tattoo done on my foot... Is it painful having that done?

i'm interested in getting horizontal transverse lobe piercings, and i'd like to know if anyone has them, or is a piercer and has done the piercing before, and how long the healing process is, rejection rate, and the pain amount. thanksss!

well, when i was younger, i already got my ear lobes pierced, but then, i got an infection on both sides, in my opinion i thought it was a really bad infection. Just a 3 weeks ago, i re pierced my earlobs again on the same spot that my infection use to be. After that, ive noticed redness and swallon ears, but just for a while though, then all of a sudden i noticed that ONE of the studs on my left ear was starting to SINK in. Apparently the studs sank to a point where u can only see a little part of it. Should i be concerned? What should i do? Im really scared. Help please and thanks.

I'm wondering if an industrial piercing would be a bad choice because of this. Also, does anyone have any tips on vitamins or anything else that can speed up the healing process?
Thanks.
Comment by Anonymous
If you want an industrial, speak to the piercer first. Ask their opinion. I can't get an industrial in either ear because of the shape of my ears, and because my cartiledge is quite thin. But there's also several other piercings you *can* get done, if you think through what you want.

i've heard cartalige takes longer to heal and that, but will it be like REALLY painfull? also, they use a needle right?

To anyone getting an industrial make sure they measure your ear with the piercing to see if it suits and fits. The pain is awkward in my personal opinion even though i have high pain tolerance it did hurt so just be prepared for that. And also consider the way you sleep because you wont be able to sleep on your ear for a while.
And out of curiosity does the anti tragus hurt i herd it doesnt the pain is like the tragus

And to answer Anonymous 1, you know when you see a slightly thicker post on an earring and you notice your ear is a little sore after it's been in for a few minutes? This is the same pain for the smaller sizes. It;s nothing very uncomfortable.
Comment by Anonymous
If you are using a pain scale to figure out what you want to get pierced, obviously you don't want it that bad. If you want the piercing bad enough, pain doesn't matter....it only takes a second.
To all the 13 - 17 year-olds inquiring about navel, eyebrow, nose, etc., seriously, just wait until you are 18 to go crazy. I know you are all eager to grow up but you don't need to rush it. Everyone I know who had those things pierced at those ages either took them out or they didn't care for them properly and they became infected.
By the way, I am 25 now and can say that from waiting until I was 18 to make decisions on what I wanted done saved me money (I've kept all my piercings) and potential scars.
OK, there's my 2 cents......

If the guy wants the piercing, then there's nothing against it.

I took my right earring out to see what it looks like because the other one still hurt a bit, and I have a little bump on the back. Is there a problem? As of now they don't hurt anymore, but I just want to know if it still needs healing time? My friend had gotten this done too and she changes hers out already, but I'm afraid it'll get infected...?
Thanks!

The bump is irritation. You should never take out jewelry until the piercing has healed.
Clean with saline, and pray that the piercing gun didn't transmit anything via bloodborn pathagens and pray all will go well.
Piercing guns cannot be properly cleaned and blood splatters into the gun and can be transmitted. Also, butterfly backed jewelry can harber bacteria which can cause infection. And, the stud causes major trauma to the tissues around the piercing, where needles do not.
Comment by Stephiee
The backing is a sealed butterball looking thing; it was very hard, even for my mother to take out. I clean them everyday with the solution they gave me, I have to get some more when I go back as I'm running low. But this can seriously take a year to heal?? That really disappoints me =/
Thank you for letting me know though, I won't take them out anymore. How would I know for sure without a doubt they are healed...I should jsut wait the year then is your best suggesstion right? Thanks for your help!

Anonymous, the number of piercings or tattoos that is excesive all depends on the person's opinion. At your age, you need to be careful about visible piercings as it doesn't make job hunts easy, and you're definitely old enough for a job.

The most painful out of my piercings was obviously my rook but it was worth it as the pain was only for a few seconds and only when the piercer put the barbell in. I don't recommend anyone getting cartilidge piercings that are younger than 14 as last year 5/6 of my friends that got them said it really hurt and they all got infected
Hope this helped xx

Which hurts more, navel or cartilage (helix,aurtil etc) ???
Comment by Nikko
It's the vertical surface piercing in front of your tragus. Does it have an actual name, or is it "the vertical surface piercing in front of your tragus"?! lol
and also, is it common for a piercer to numb cartilage area before a piercing or is it something you have to request?
thanks x

I would say to check the prices of the piercing parlors and tattoo shops and find the cheapest one (be mindful to check the quality -> type of jewelery, sanity measures, procedure, etc) sometimes there are coupons online =) my tattoo parlor had a 10% off on their website, good luck!
