Proper Etiquette When Getting a Tattoo

When getting a tattoo, in a way it's like going to get your hair cut, sitting on the bus, going to the library, or eating at a restaurant. You need to have proper etiquette, and you'll find that each occasion has different procedures that you should follow- you don't want to tip the librarian for letting you check out a book, but you do want to tip your tattoo artist.
Here are a few simple etiquette procedures that you should consider when going to get a new tattoo. They are pretty simple and straight forward. Follow them, and your tattoo artist will be appreciative that you're not another jerk customer.
1. Make sure to eat at least 4 hours prior to getting the tattoo. You want to make sure that your sugar levels are high, so that you don't pass out.
2. Don't consume alcohol before the tattoo. This will cause you to bleed excessively, which can cause problems when tattooing. Also, do not use narcotics either. (Typically if a tattoo artist can smell either on you, you won't get tattooed.)
3. Dress appropriately. Remember that the tattoo artist can't tattoo through clothes, so you want to make sure that the artist can get to the area that you want tattooed.
4. Do not fidget or move around constantly while being tattooed. You want to keep realistic expectations about the tattoo; the artist will have problems successfully tattooing you if you are overly nervous, extremely sensitive to touch, or just move too much.
5. Be 18 years old, or have a parent with you. Not all states allow you to be under the age of 18 with or without a parent, so make sure that you know the state laws before you show up.
5a. Do not bring your children with you.
5b. Do not bring an entourage with you. Most tattoo artists will allow one person to be with you while you're getting tattooed, but you don't want to bring all of your friends with you.
6. TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE!
7. Do not bring food into the tattoo area.
8. Make sure that you know what you're getting or what you want. There are many artists who will not set up an appointment if you don't know what you want.
8a.Do not ask to replicate a tattoo from the artist's portfolio.
9. Do not haggle with the tattoo artist's price. Remember that he has to make money too, and if you don't like the price, then go to another tattoo artist to get another quote. Then make your decision as to which price you prefer; don't downgrade the artist's work by offering a much lower price.
9a. Remember to tip. The tip is not included in the tattoo artist's price; you have to add that in afterward.
10. If you are sick, re-schedule your appointment, because a tattoo artist will not tattoo you if you are sick. They don't want your germs floating around the tattoo area. Even though you are excited about the new tattoo, you're better off waiting until you are well.
