Racism in Body Modifications

May 15th 2008 17:14
Depending on where you live, it can be rather challenging to get a good job if you have visible tattoos and/or piercings. What sucks is that you could be a great person, very talented, and super qualified for the position, but if you have body modifications of these sorts or others, you may be turned down.

How is America supposed to be the land of the free, if you can't do what you want and still get a job and be looked at like a normal citizen?

Just because a person has tattoos and piercings does not mean they are bad people. Come on... Think people!

My boyfriend has several tattoos and largely stretched ears. A woman told him that she will always support him and his children because he's a freak and will never get a good job, and yes she called him a freak. She said his future kids will be embarrased of him and will get picked on because of him. She told him he'll never get a decent job and he's going to live off of welfare.

Hm..

Yea way to not be racist. Racism is just black and white, Jewish or Catholic, man or woman; it can also include those who have tattoos and body mods and those who do not.

I'd say I'm an upstanding person in society. I'm in college. I don't do drugs, steal, or cheat. I'm a smart kid, I'd say. But, I have 2 tattoos and 9 piercings, both of which will have increasing numbers in due time. Do I fall into the category of a person who will never get a job and will be on welfare when I'm older?

No. Not necessarily.

I have plans for my life and those plans can be worked around my body modifications. Not everyone with tattoos are freaks and bums. Not everyone with a labret piercing or tongue ring is going to mug you or lay on the couch soaking up your hard earned money.

Come on people... It's a new age. We're not in the 20's any longer. I think that slowly but surely, people are changing and by the time I'm older and you're older, the majority of humanity will have a body modification of some kind.

Is this just the transition period in which if you have more than 1 tattoo or visible piercing, you're automatically deemed a freak? Or will people really change their minds and understand those people who feel the need, or just want, for a body modification?
