My Nose Piercing Adventure.
December 3rd 2007 05:14
I love nose piercings. I've wanted one for ages, but thus far I'd been too scared to get one (I have a fairly conservative Christian mother who spent most of my childhood telling me of all the horrible things that could happen if I ever dared to get facial piercings - especially a nose piercing. Aside from that, I have a lot of allergies.) However, yesterday I decided to take the plunge.
For any Brisbane readers, I'd recommend Cosmetics Plus at Chermside at the best place to get pierced. I got my other facial piercing (a Marilyn) in Coff's Harbour at a tiny studio in an alleyway somewhere. Because of this, I expected the piercing experience to simply be a matter of turning up, explaining what you want pieced, having a needle shoved into you, paying and leaving. Cosmetics Plus required me to fill out a form, provide identification and make an appointment. They also spent more time on the actual piercing, and used sterile equipment. It hurt, but I was really happy with my new piercing, it looked great and the redness went down within an hour.
The problem occured when this morning my boyfriend pointed out that I had a lot of dry blood on my nose where the piercing should be, and he couldn't see the little purple gem at all. This was because it had fallen out in my sleep (this is not the type of stud that comes out easily). I spent about an hour trying to get it back in, but to no avail. Although most of the piercing was still open, the very back of it had healed over, meaning that I couldn't get it through. Of course, my nose went very red, my eyes watered, and I probably did some damage to my nose. If this happens to you, I have this advice to give - do not try to repierce it yourself, particularly with an earring. It hurts, and it just won't work.
I ended up going back to Cosmetics Plus to try and get the stud professionally re-fitted. The piercer there tried, but eventually told me that it would be a lot less painful to just re-pierce it. She was right - because the hole was still mostly open, it wasn't anywhere near as painful as the original piercing. I was also told that if I'd let the hole heal, it would have been incredibly painful to get it re-pierced later.
Moral of the story? If you lose your new piercing in the middle of the night, just get it re-done the next day. It's a lot easier and less painful.
The thing that worries me is that I must be an incredibly rough sleeper for the piercing to have come out in the first place. It would have required two or three twists in different directions, which is not the sort of thing most people can do in their sleep. Why has no one told me about this before?

Ouch. I've never been a fan of the idea of facial piercings, seriously, except my lip ring wanting (hint: I have a DENT in my lip... c'mon, that is SO a sign), but I want my cartilage done. I remember getting my ears pierced. I have really sensitive ears from ear infections, and the blood rush hurt like a son of a *beep*.
I've repierced my ears myself, since then, and built up a tolerance for pain, though.
That sounds very, very unfortunate. And that rough sleeping is crazy.
Congrats on the piercing though!
