Microdermal Implants

June 25th 2008 15:45
So here's just one more hardcore modification that once again involves implants. You've already seen subdermal implants, transdermal implants, and eyeball implants. Now, it's time to introduce microdermal implants.

by graphic.ward

Microdermal implants, which is also known as surface anchors have evolved from the techniques of pocketing, dermal anchoring, and transdermal implants. Basically, a microdermal implant is supposed to look like a transdermal implant, but be a realitively safe procedure, similar to body piercing. The end effect is to give the client the appearance that the jewelry is screwed into the skin.

Microdermal Anchors

The jewelry used is similar to transdermal anchors, but smaller. The base is flat with holes, which is supposed to aid stabilization of the jewelry. The tissues are meant to grow through and around the base of the jewelry, to increase stabilization and decrease risks of rejection. To minimize longterm risks, you want to make sure that the jewelry is made of titanium rather than a type of steel.

There are generally different styles of microdermal anchors. Some of them include:
1. One large hole with an longer, oval base.
2. One medium hole and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval base.
3. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval shaped base
4. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of hte screw with a curved base.

The microdermal implant procedure is pretty simple. I've seen two different ways to have the implant inserted. The first method is by inserting a beveled piercing needle at an angle into the entry/exit point, and the second method is by using a dermal punch. With either procedure, the hole is made and the microdermal jewelry anchor is insterted into the hole and coerced into the correct placement.

Microdermal Anchor Procedure with Dermal Punch

Some say that the microdermal implant procedure is no more or less painful than getting a surface piercing. The procedure does not involve using anesthetics or specialized tools.

You just want to make sure that you go to a qualified person who is well versed in surface anchoring.

by aceroypiel

As for healing a microdermal implant, the exact aftercare is not pinpointed to a particular technique, as the procedure is still pretty new. But, for the most part, you'll want to make sure to keep the area clean, dry, and free if irritants. Don't use lotions or sprays near the area, and you don't want to go swimming until the impant is healed, which can take 1 to 3 months.

Surprisingly, the difference between microdermal implants and transdermal implants and surface piercings, is that the rejection rate is much less and the sucess rate higher.

The related risks that you want to be aware of include:
* Inward Travelling Infection
* Deep Microdermal Placement
* Rejection
* Keloids
* Hypertrophic Scarring
* Bruising (temporary usually)
* Implant Rejection

i need to know a about the procedure a little more, like when a dermal punch of 1.5mm is inserted, is the skin pinched up and shimmyed on or do you cut pushing all the way down? then where should the rise of the peircing be 2.0 mm or 2.5mm on different parts of the body?

This procedure is really nothing to worry about
i have one above my cleavage. Its a fast and worry-free procedure. The way mine was done, using a tool made for these piercings, they punch a hole in your skin, now the term "punch" might sound painful, but they just push down on your skin for a second or two. It burns a bit but goes away pretty fast. After they insert the base, my pin was already screwed into it so he didnt have to mess with it while it was in my freshly cut skin, after using small clamps, they quilky insert the base into the hole made by the punch. Thats it ! It will be a bit sore for the day and also depending where you get it, might make you have to be careful, luckily mine didnt bother me much. I got mine done in the morning and left myself the day to just relax. There is hardly any pain, its just sore. This piercing is really amazing cause it heals really fast ! I was able to change my pin only a week after i got it done. I totally recommend this piercing to anyone who wants something easy and fast

I just got one on my ring finger as a form of engagement ring. The procedure its self hurt like hell but within a few minutes the pain was totally gone. It was a little sore to touch and hurt quite a bit when I would bump it. Now, a week later, it is pain free and looking great. I just hope it holds up considering the location. For after care I used a regiment of dial soap, saline solution, and bactine spray...It worked great!

ive just had a microdermal on the back of my neck. its been 3 days and its still a bit red, just wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect and the best ways to keep it infection free, at the moment in just using saline solution and antiseptic spray!

August 10th 2009 21:31
Redness is to be expected. You just had major trauma to your skin. Keep with the saline. I wouldn't necessarily use the antiseptic spray.

i have four microdermals on my hips (2 on right, 2 on left) the pain was relativley nothing. one hurt, quite badly because the piercer hit a vein and that one gushed for a good 15 minuets haha. that one also bruied quite badly, but the other 3 were fine. i've had them for a few months now and they're doing well. every once in a while i'll wake up and one or 2 will be swolen and pussy, but if i wash them and spary them with sea salt, the swelling and pussing is gone by the end of the day.

sounds like a stupid question, but is it only only surgery how you can get them out? i really want a surface piercing but dont really know much about them =/ thanks x

Comment by Whitney

October 13th 2009 13:32
For the most part yes. The tissues will grow through the base of the implant, and you won't be able to just pull it out.

Surface piercings are not implants. They are more temporary with a high risk of rejection and infection. These are more permanent, but do require a mild surgical procedure to have them removed.

But what hurts more in your opinion?
Toung // Hip?

panda, I'm not sure what you mean by go funny. Please elaborate if you can.

Anonymous, hip will hurt worse and be less permanent depending on what method you choose to get it done.

Hey,

Thanks for all the great info on the page. I was thinking about getting 3 microdermals like in the first photo of the article, only a bit more spread out and lower, so they don't get disturbed by the camera neck strap

I have 2 problems, would be great if you could answer me
1. I get regular massages, i sit in front of the computer for many hours /day and i have some back problems. How sensitive are the microdermals after they heal? Do i have to give up massage in that area?
2. A friend of mine has 2, and said they lift up a bit after they get healed if it's not a "fleshy" area. And i am pretty skinny. Can this be a problem? On the back they would get hooked on clothes if that's the case i guess.

Thanks a lot for your time

Do the dermal piercings shift? i was told that after a certain period of time that they will start to shift underneath the skin.

Comment by Whitney

If not performed properly during implant, and if your body doesn't take to them, it is possible.

Comment by Whitney

December 1st 2009 20:31
Rux, once healed they should be fine. most of sensitivity will depend on your body and how it heals the implants. The lifting can be a problem if they lift enough to snag.

I just had one put in yesterday, right above my belly button. I thought I wanted a really tiny stone, but now i realize it is too small and need to change it to a larger gem. It is no longer flush with my skin but a bit sunk in.

1. Is it too early to go back and have my piercer change it to a larger 'tip' or 'head'?
2. What if I become pregant? Will that change anything?

BTW being on my tummy, it HURT being put in and now it is very sensitive when I bend or move...not too bad. I think it will be fine when it finally heals. I will love the look when it is a larger stone because unlike a belly button peircing, there isn't anything hanging out of the middle of my belly button.

Comment by Whitney

December 8th 2009 22:58
Yes, it's too early. If you become pregnant, you may experience rejection or migration.

okay so i went and had my hips pierced. one on each side. all he did was pinch my skin poke a hole and quickly place the jewlery inside of the hole. as he used a special tool to make the hole in my skin, yes it hurt but only while he was making the hole, putting the jewlery in didnt not hurt and they were never sore or hurt or anything at all after i left the shop. it was so worth those 5 seconds of pain! i love them

I had a microdermal on the back of my neck, about even with my shoulders. It's was done only yesterday, but everything is good so far, just a little bit of soreness. I heard that can be expected, so it's nothing to worry about, right?
I've kept it bandaged down so it doesn't shift, as they told me to. Just two bandaids in an "X" pattern. I change them once a day
I also clean it twice daily. In the morning when I shower with Ivory fragrance-free soap and before I go to bed with saline solution. Is there anything else I can do to make sure it doesn't reject? I'm really a fan of this piercing.

Also, the worst part of the procedure was when he wedged it in. The best thing to do is relax. It stung when I tensed up, so take deep breaths, most of the pain is in your head.

I have a 5 point star at the base of my neck at the collarbone just below the shoulder..if that makes sense. So i have 10 mdi's total. I love my star but damn these bad boys are alot of up keep for me. I wash everyday with soap and water and do a seasalt soak once a week. I couldn't imagine having these in a unreachable place because of that. For those of you thinking of getting them they do look badass but remove is very painful, in your head my ass. That shit hurts. But all in all I love them and obviously they aren't too much of a hassel or those bitches would be gone...

Comment by Whitney

January 19th 2010 20:18
Removal will more than likely leave scarring, but the amount will vary on your body's tendency to scar.

The soreness afterward is normal. I'm a little surprised you were told to use bandaids, as this can cause the implant not to be able to breath properly.

I am thinking about getting two implants on my chest above dragonfly tatoos, is this a real sensitve area? and I was told it could take a year to heal???? I also just had a breast reduction and am in the process of working out and loosing weight. Will this affect the implant and cause more pain as I loose weight?

Comment by Whitney

January 25th 2010 16:42
It can take over a year in some cases. Healing will vary from person to person. The change in skin may have an effect on the implant. The area can be sensitive, but that will vary from person to person.

Has anyone ever had them reject? What can you expect to see or feel when it rejects? I have one on my finger, and it is healing well and has never been infected. I recently noticed that my skin around the piercing is dry and chapped, but I do not over-clean it (so that shouldn't be the cause of dryness). In fact, I don't use sea salt anymore, and only clean it when I normally wash my hands. It is not red or painful. I recently unscrewed the head off for a closer look, and I think I can sort of see the darkness of the metal bar underneath... Is this normal or possibly a sign of rejection?

I've had the implant for about a month now. I watch it carefully because I snagged it about one week after I got it and the entire thing came out, but I sterilized everything and put it back in place under my skin. I am paranoid that when I put it back in I might not have put it back right (deep enough) but I think I'm being paranoid because it fit in snuggly and I could feel it go right back into place. But since then I've been very afraid of rejection. Suprisingly it never got infected from the whole experience!

So if anyone can give me some insight as to what to expect to see if your body rejects the implant that would be great!

Comment by Whitney

February 2nd 2010 16:07
Rejection isn't as common, but you may experience soreness, redness, and the jewelry will start to push out of the body.

The darkness is probably scarring.

You are at a higher risk of rejection or migration because of the complications early on with the implant.

Lots of very knowledgeable information... I really enjoyed the read, comments, and replies. Sadly though when i tried to watch the piercing needle procedure the video was removed, I myself tried a "different" location than what I've seen and it turned out great until it got infected... I had a dermal implant in place of a lebret... unfortunately I got rather drunk that night and long story short I got beer in my fresh piercing... then it rejected.

I'm looking forward to talking to my piercer about trying the dermal punch method for my next microdermal.

In october I had three put in on my hipbone...and I have absolutely loved them! I had them done the dermal punch method, they hurt like hell to put in, but it was well worth it. At first I had troubles with them, the short end of the anchor was pointed down, and with my skin being so elasticy right there at the hip they would pop out. So, after struggling with them for a month, my piercer took them out and flipped them around and I havent had any problems! One of them, the middle one is slightly crooked, but not enough for anyone to notice but me.

I love these things!

i got mine done above my cleavage about 3-4 months ago maybe even longer and there was no pussing the only thing that bothered me was when i slept because it just felt really tight on my chest during the healing process. now today i noticed it was sore and i touched it and when i did puss squirted out and now it wont really stop and it hurts really bad i think i might have it infected.

i can feel it moving in my skin and its really freaking me out has this happened to anyone else??

I've had 2 microdermal anchers not quite on my hips, more inner and at first they had so many problems but then were completely fine. It's been over a year and so, and now one of them is starting to get irritated. It's been extremely sore and red; I can't even lie down on my stomach because it hurts =[ I put polysporin on it until I was told that shouldn't be placed on it; and then it started pussing too. I don't know if these are signs of rejection or if it's just irritated/infected and what I could do to prevent it?

Alright, I got a microdermal about a month ago, i got it done not with the dermal punch method but the other. They said they put it in "to soft" of a spot, because the gem came loose, fell off, and the implant sank into my skin where i couldnt visably see it. They had to anchor it out for two hours within 6 hours of me getting it. It didn't hurt too awfully bad, but I also have a high pain tolerance. It left a scar, but it only looks like a freckle.

Im only 15 i have my belly button done and it absessed but then healed withthin the next month. Will it do that to my microdermal. Im so nervous. And i excersize a bunch aswell but wiill that affect it at all.

Comment by Amanda Schweim

February 25th 2010 20:06
I exercise alot myself...i dont have any problems with mine (I have three on my hip bone). Just make sure you clean them regularly...after exercising and such. If you ever have problems with them even getting slightly infected, just go back to your piercer, they know more about your skin and the way it heals around piercings than you do. when i first got mine done, it kept rejecting them, popping them out, and I found out that I was keeping the area (the skin around the anchor) soft by cleaning it alot...and keeping neosporin on it...and i only really needed to clean it morning and night, and neosporin every other day. Everyones skin elasticity is different. If your piercer is a good piercer he/she will recognize this.
Good luck!

i was thinking about getting a corset piercing and i was told to check out the microdermal option. Is hoop jewelry available? After it is healed could you corset it with a lttle tension? I want them down both sides about 12 on each side. so 24 total! How long do they last?

Comment by Whitney

March 15th 2010 17:56
Corset with any tension isn't a good idea.

Surface piercings don't last that long. Microdermals are more permanent, and after healing if you decide to remove takes a good bit of effort and procedure to cut out.

I'm not sure if you can purchase attachments for microdermal jewelry to have hoops.

i just had the cleavage done.. and it was painful. well the my piercer, he punched a hole, then he put the gem in and then he pressed it down and it hurts like hell. i thought he was about to break my chest! then later on he told me he punched a hole a lil bigger than the gem... so i don't know if that will be bad for healing process... but he said it would be fine, i just need to go get it check up with him again...

Ok, here's some answers for you all.
I had 3 microdermals done in January, one at the top of my belly button and one on either side of my belly button. One of them started to get infected a few weeks ago and I got some Cephalexin Antibiotic tablets from my doctor and then while taking the tablets, one of my other implants started getting infected. The antibiotics cleared both of them up. Then a few days after I stopped the antibiotics my 3rd implant got infected, this time I got Bactroban cream from my doctor and it worked a treat!
I they get infected, antibiotics work, they don't necessarily have to be removed.
About the ring type of jewelery, painfulpleasures.com offer rings that have a ball that screw onto the anchor.
And lastly, my piercer told me to clean it with nothing but plain water for at least 2 weeks and then to use a cleaning gel or saline and to keep it covered with a non stick gauze dressing and micropore tape. Up until my recent infections mine have been really great!
And yes, when i move the top of mine, i can feel it moving under my skin slightly. If i move it in a certain way, i can feel the anchor through my skin.

Almostunderoath, not too sure about the pregnancy thing.
If you get them on your back, you would have to try to clean them in front of a mirror or get someone else to clean them for you.
I've found the easiest way of cleaning them is with a wet, flattened out cotton ball so you can slide it under the top disc.

hey on the ring thing, i have a dermal corset, it consists of ten dermal anchors, each have their own pop of ring so you don't put any stress on the piercing when its not laced.

its expensive todo and not entirely painless and definately not for someone who hasn't been pierced before as looking after that many piercings at once is hard work.

but mines on my side, get it done with flat head before you change to rings and heve them in about three months before you ring it up as you want the implant to be completly settled into your skin.

and SALINE SALINE SALINE.
if any of them start not sitting quite as flush, just tape them down for a few days and they'll be fine =]

I just got micro dermals yesterday. It's under my collar bone. My piercer did them with the needle, it didn't hurt that much and i'm probably the biggest pussy when it comes to pain. The second one hurt a tiny bit more, and it was a bit harder to put the base in. But, they look amazing (the only thing i would change if i could, would be the distance from one to the other. Kinda wish they were further apart.) Anyways, the left one seems to be doing amazing, sitting flush to the skin... But the right one looked like it's a tiny bit raised... I'm not too worried. I keep bandages over them in the morning, for about five hours, and when i sleep. I will do the bandage thing for about a week or two, but i will keep the bandages on when i sleep, for about a month. I use a natural spray called ,"Dragon spray". It's amazing, smells great and makes my dermals feel like there's nothing there. I am a tad bit worried that they will maybe migrate because when i do my hair or put a shirt on, the skin moves there. I'm sure they'll be fine though.

ALSO, I HEARD THAT WHEN REMOVING MICRO-DERMALS... YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT THE SKIN. My piercer can gently put the needle inside the piercing, loosen the graphed skin and gently pull them out one base at a time. I feel sorry for whoever had to get them surgically cut out. That sounds fucking horrible.

My daughter has had several piercings, although her skin has always been sensitive to certain metals. She recently had a nape surface piercing which rejected ( due to the metal used by the piercer). She wants dermals, in her chest & were told it was a high risk area. Can you give me any information on that? I also read dermal piercings have a lower rejection rate. Is it really just a chance we have to take, a “just wait and see”. Any information would help.
Thank you

March 30th 2010 13:30
Stephy, when the tissue starts to grow through the base of the implant, it will be rather hard to just take a needle and pop it out.

Caryn, what sort of info are you looking for? Dermal implants do have a lower rejection rate than surface piercings. But, in general, each body is different. With any piercing it's a wait and see. Surface piercings are more of a wait till it rejects, not a wait and see if it heals.

@Whitney, yes I know the skin graphs through the base of the dermals. What I mean is he unscrews the jewel park, takes a special needle and loosens the skin. There are many ways to remove a microdermal, the most common just happens to be cutting the surface of your skin with a scaple.

Comment by Whitney

March 31st 2010 19:41
I have never heard of a "special needle" for removal. There is no way get the needle in except to puncture the skin all the way around the jewelry, and to go underneath to basically cut the tissues loose. Some will just cut right around the jewelry and just pull the jewelry out. There will still be a cut in the skin. It's not as easy to remove a microdermal as it is a piercing.

Comment by Stephyy

March 31st 2010 20:35
@ Whiteney, I called it a special needle because he removed some of my friends dermals by a needle. Not a scalpel. Sue me for not knowing the name of that specific needle. I have seen different places remove dermals different ways. At a place called Adrenalin they remove it by the way you described above; by cutting around the jewelry, then pulling it out. I slightly disagree with that way, because the small incision method seems a lot less painful and less scarring seems to form, and that's how I see most dermals removed. The way my piercer removes microdermals (I've seen him do it many times, because I tend to like to research my piercings before I get anything done, let alone a semi-permanent one like microdermals.) He takes the jeweled part off, dips the needle inside to loosen the graphed skin, does it to the other side if it has two sides to a base. Then he massages the base out. It's unnecessary to cut all the way around the piercing.
Anyways, I'm done for explaining this... As I really don't feel like arguing with anyone... Especially over the internet. I've seen this removal method done before (successfully) and you don't have to believe it.

On another note my microdermals are looking pretty good. The right one (the one that was not sitting as close to the skin as i wanted it to) is now flush to my skin. I'm sooo excited to change them! I've also seen some nude internally threaded jewelry online that I want to use for work... But what i'm wondering is... if you can change the jewelry to any 14g internally threaded head? Not sure.

Ooooh, yeah. I've seen the twisting method. That would hurt a lot. They do that at a place called ,"the fall". One of my friends went there and the guy did the twisting method (where you just twist the jewelry and then massage the base out). She told them to stop and we went to a different place.
She had bruising around the hole for a while. It probably traumatized her body.

I wasn't trying to be rude with the "special needle" that's just what you called it so I thought he used a needle that was different than a regular piercing needle.

A small incision is made around the jewelry and the needle or scalpel is used to cut the tissues. You are describing the same thing that I am. And, buy around, that doesn't mean all the way around, it means to some degree around the jewelry, typically one side.

Both methods are still considered more "surgical" than just removing the jewelry to a piercing. The tissues are still cut or sliced by some tool to get the jewelry out.

No one is arguing with you. I'm not frustrated or pissed or upset that there is another method than the common method. I'm just describing to you the method that I know, and you're describing the method you were explained. Two different methods for the same purpose. The practice is still relatively new and no one method is better or more right than the other.

I've had 4 microdermals in my stomach for about 3 months now. they healed quickly and I've never had any trouble with them. However, today I noticed the skin around one of them is pink and i can see where the ancor is underneath the skin (which I never could before.) It is also very sore and pussing a little bit. does this mean it is rejecting or infected? If so what should I do?

I got a microdermal done a month ago an inch below my eye. I went today to get the top changed but when the piercer tried to unscrew it he twisted the whole thing including the anchor;now its swollen, it throbes, and wont stop hurting. Should i wait it out to see if the swelling goes away or go to a doctor?

I had one done by my eye in jan and have had a go at trying to change the top, but it bloody hurts as i try to un screw it and feels like the whole thing under my skin is going to twist round, does that mean it hasnt taken fully yet?? i havent had any problems with it at all apart from hitting it a few times when washing my face and forgetting it was there which made it bleed.

It does sounds like it's rejecting.

The piercer has no clue what he's doing, doing go back to him.

It's not healing properly, and sounds quite irritated.

Z, It's highly likely to have them caught in pants and underwear when in that area.

I really want to get just one dermal on my hip. I want it lower though like below or right above my pant line. Are you allowed to get them anywhere you want or do they tell you it should be in a certain place? (I'm worried about the snagging on my pants)

I'm also concerned about the pregnancy thing. If they are that low I don't think they will be too much in the way, but do you have to remove them if you get pregnant?

Hey
This page has been very informative so far but I still have a question. I've been thinking about getting 3 micros on the back of my ear close to the hairline going towards my neck. I've been looking a different site for information and I think it is probably a risky area considering people tend to move their neck left and right thus stretching the skin where the micros would be sitting. But, I'll ask anyway... So my questions is, is titanium the only material used for micros or you could use plastic? I'm just asking because I tend to be paranoid about what could happen in the future, I wouldn't want to take them out if I were to get some kind of scan at the hospital...
Thank you

April 21st 2010 15:00
Z, yes it can potentially mess up the implant.

volleyballplayer, a bandaid won't protect against a ball

Anonymous, snagging is a big concern. Pregnancy probably not as much, but still potential. In general implants move with your skin where a barbel would get too small.

Anonymous, titanium and stainless are the best and safest options. plastic can harbor bacteria for healing wounds, and isn't recommended. They would need to be removed for surgery and scans. Some surgeons won't even allow retainers in piercings, so even if someone were to do a plastic implant, it's probably still have to be removed.

i recently got two dermals on my hip. only one bled so he sqeezed it after inserting the dermal to finish getting the blood out. he said it is expected to bruise, which it is, it looks like someone kicked me in my side its that big! and there is also a red spot next to my dermal, it looks like a blod clot? and when i feel it, its like a knot under my skin, what is it and what should i do? please help!

Anonymous, you should go back to your piercer and raise your concerns with them.
I have 3 around my belly button, 2 of which bled but my piercer didn't squeeze them 'to get the rest of the blood out'. As for bruising, mine were a little bruised and tender for quite a few days after i had them done but nothing as bad as you have described.
The piercer should be more than willing to have a look at it and give you advice but if that fails, your doctor may be able to help.
How long have they been done? And does it look to be infected at all? Sometimes (my own experience) the small lump next to it may be pus filled.
I hope I have been of help.

I just recently got two dermals on my collar bones. I had them done on Sunday and the only time I experienced any pain was during the piercing. I've been cleaning them daily. The one on the left looks a little raised and you can see a gray dot if you look closely which is the end of the foot... I went in to see the piercer today and they said that it doesn't seem to be rejecting since I'm not experiecing pain and its not red. Apparently it shoud get "sucked down into place" as it heals more. I was just wondering if that's true because I haven't snagged them on anything or had any pain or redness that would've led to rejection.

My new microdermal's are sticking out a wee bit to were I can see the bar. Is it all in my head? Or should I worry about rejection?

You just got the piercing. Why would it be healed near immediately. So, no it's not healed. You are just seeing the bar where the swelling may have gone down, or where the piercer didn't put them in deep enough, all depending on how much barbell you are seeing. You won't see any piercing or implant heal in one day.

Hi all,
I've had two MD for 2 1/2 years now, one on my wrist and one under my eye. I'm sad to say my wrist came out today. It has been awful, kept bumping it so it went crooked. Today I got it caught taking off my gloves (work in a hospital) and half of it came out. Don't worry it didn't hurt, I just went to my piercer and she just pulled it out. No needle, no scalpel. As big of a pain in the butt it was I will miss it. To those thinking about getting one done, make sure you really think about it first.

There is going to be potential problems with any piercing or implant. They may cause problems if you get pregnant, in terms of rejection or complication with the implant. I'm not sure if you would have to get them removed, that's something that you should talk to a professional about (just make sure that you definitely find someone who is familiar with them, not just a piercer who knows the process).

I'm not sure what you mean by non stop problems.

Non stop problems...as in problems that do not go away. Some people i hear complain about them after having them for a year.. and unlike other piercings there are not always potential problems, they heal..and you dont have to worry about them..but if i was to get dermals i wouldnt want to worry about them rejecting a yr down the road u knoe..

I have three on my hip. and i love them. i havent had a problem. i have had mine for about 9 months now, the first three months were rough, but it's just because my piercer put them in wrong. one they were fixed, everything has been great. if you want them on your hip, i would just suggest...be careful with them. watch your pants...just make sure you dont wear any that have a waistline right where the MD is. you risk ripping it out. round bandaids are a lifesaver for things like this. especially in the first few months, and with jeans. when in doubt, wear them, or risk accidentally ripping them out. The first few weeks the most vulnerable your MD is to be ripped out easily. just treat them with care and you'll be fine. i love mine.

OO... I haven't heard about constant problems with them, but when compared to piercings there are potentially less problems, especially surface piercings. And, yes, I agree that if you spend the money, I wouldn't want them to reject either, especially as that's more of a complication than it's worth (in my opinion). It's just something that you don't know what will happen unless you get them. More people have less problems with implants than with surface piercings.

Amanda, I'm glad you've had such an easy time with your. You definitely have to be careful of who you get to do them, as not everyone knows what they're doing.

Comment by Whitney

May 19th 2010 20:03
JayBehr, I've never really heard of anyone screwing off the jewelry. But I would assume that you would still see the metal screw that the ball screws into.

Heather, I would wait until completely healed. I wouldn't recommend soaking them in any body of water- pool, hot tub, lake, river, ocean, etc. until fully healed.

How long does it take them to fully heal? Like what is the average time. 1 month? 3 months? Thanks!

Comment by Amanda S

May 20th 2010 17:41
Jaybehr, I unscrew mine all the time...after they're healed, you really dont need to wear the jewelry all the time. Yes, you can see the ancor...its about the size of a pin top. Depending on how deep the piercer puts the anchor in would depend on how visible it would be (as to how far the base sticks out).
Heather-you can obviously take a shower and such...haha. water is good for it, but yes, be careful about the ocean, pools...stuff with alot of chemicals (chlorine) or filth (ocean or lake). If you want to swim, wear a waterproof bandaid, and make sure you clean the piercing really well after swimming, you dont want to risk infection. As far as healing, it depends on your body. Average it takes about 5 months for your fat cells to fully grow into the little holes on the anchor, thus anchoring it into your skin. Some people it heals faster. For me, it takes about three months. You can tell when it has healed...it feels secure, redness is gone, it doesnt hurt when you accidently hit it or move it...stuff like that. Hope that helps! This is all based off of me, i've not talked to anyone else...so others may have different suggestions.

Anonymous, Healing time will vary per person.

Heather, It's best to wait until the microdermal is fully healed, which will vary per person. They heal from the outside in, so you'll find in a lot of cases, they'll seem like their healed, but the inside of the implant may not be fully healed.

Anonymous, You can request titanium jewelry instead of the stainless. That should help reduce any irritation.

I was thinking about getting one on my finger, in between my knuckle and hand so it would be right were a ring would sit. I am wondering if this is a good idea because of the location. I understand that there are a lot of risk like if you bump it into something or snag it its going to cause a longer healing time, might cause scar tissue and could lead to an infection or it coming out.

So, it's been a month and some time since I first got my micros done.
The right one was odd looking and always had been and then it came out... I got it re-done and then a few days later the right one came out.
I got them both fixed... My piercer said that the reason why they came out is because he apparently didn't pierce them deep enough. Anyways, they're fixed now... But now I'm having troubles with the right now... Yet again. It's incredibly annoying to have to get them repierced and have to heal them. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it my piercers fault? He did them both by needle and I've been taking care of them religiously. I put bandaids on them for three days straight, putting bandaids on them at night. Cleaning them with "dragon mist" two times a day. The left one looks good... But the right one is giving me the same problems as before (reddish purple around the piercing, me needing to secure it with a bandaid so it heals straight)
Should I just get it re-done somewhere else? Or is it me that's fucking up?

Hey, this site is really informative, especially you Whitney. I have a question/inquiry..

I'm interested in getting a tiny black gem microdermal with my white ink tattoo behind my ear and on my wrist. I'm curious as to the location. I hear the inside of the wrist is a trouble area because of main veins running through it. Then the whole behind the ear one, I work retail and I'm a student so I'm consistently moving my head every which direction, stretching the skin behind my ears. I'm guessing my question is what is the risk really?

I also play professional paintball, I guess that right there is a big reason to consider placement. LOL

Also, price quotes? Like a general ballpark figure?

I got my dermals on my collarbones a month ago and had to get the left taken out due to it not being pierced deep enough, my problem or concern now is that the remaining one wiggles around when I touch it. Is this a problem or something of littlde concern? Also, it sits at a very slight angle, hard to notice unless you're over observant and OCD like me. So I was wondering, since it's only been a month could bandaids help them sit correctly or was that only for the first couple of days? I'd just like to eliminate any causes for snagging and is it ok if it gets very mildly irritated every once in a while, not red just a little tender to the touch on the top only. Thank you for reading this. (:

In the last week it has been gradually getting redder (it got quite a bang at a rave which seems to be the catalyst) and in the last few days started to puss a fair bit which i am gently squeezing out with cottonbuds dipped in saline. it seems to be about twice a day that needs doing.

Thinking about getting the third eye done. Wondering about shifting over time. Do you think because of the placement I will have problems with it later on down the road? I heard that because of it being in a high tension zone (In between the eyebrows, a lot of movement and pressure) that it would cause problems as your skin ages and wrinkles.. I'm trying to find out as much as I can before I get it done, because it would suck for it to mess up or something... really not fond of the idea of having a huge scar on my forehead, or having a piercing slowly slide down my face. :/

It is possible as the area of your implant has more movement and it's movement that you don't even realize in most cases. The more movement and potential irritation. Friction in the area, the more potential for complications.

Hey, I've just returned from the piercing studio in Chingford, London (most recommended, look up Addictions Tattoos) and am about to unveil the four little blighters I've stuck above and below my collar bone.
I have NEVER had any body modifications before, so this was pretty big for me to get anchors.

My experience: For anyone adverse to pain you will often have a anesthetic swab to take the bite off. The proceedure was pretty swift, a dermal punch was used to literally core out a tiny cylindrical fraction of skin about half a centimeter deep. The punch isolates the skin it cuts then pulls it out, not much of a problem under annesthetic. It's the kind of pain you have to breathe in and accept, the adrenaline will do the rest. =)

However I asked for the third anchor to be done without pain relief, and the pain was pretty damn sharp - it sent my body into shock and I nearly passed out. DON'T be scared by this! A good piercer will be able to look after you and coax you back to feeling safe, like I was. It only happened to me because of my inexperience I reckon, so don't be put off if you are already into bodymodding. I'm glad I asked for one 'real' piercing however, it's possible I might even have enjoyed it!

I've got cones and ball attachments on them. Be aware if you choose something like cones that stick out they won't be mirror images on either side of the body - the cone on the left currently points in a slightly different direction to the one on the opposite side. To be expected, don't feel let down, it's just your skin being unsymmetrical. I think it adds a flavour of peculiarity, which I like!

I thought htere'd be tonnes of blood, but apparently I didn't bleed half as much as most people! Think I was lucky tbh.

I found it helpful to talk to your piercer, ask them what they're doing right now to you, chat etc. It'll take the body load down a notch.

Finally, I'd adivse to prepare suitably - have an energy drink before going in, keep some in a bag to hand when you're having it done (if you're a wuss like me!) and eat a lot before and after. Wash yourself before going too, to be considerate. And of course go around as many websites and forum threads like this to be prepared. I watched some youtube vids, put me in an advantagous position of knowledge.

I'll update on soreness etc soon, up until now i've been really careful and walked like I'm a statue to get home! There is no pain now 4 hrs in, and I think a lot of people will agree that that is the case in most scenarios.

Hope this has helped!

Hi Anonymous, i would get the tattoo first and then i would leave it at least 8 weeks to allow enough healing time then get the microdermal done. You can either buy a sea salt spray such as H2Ocean or mix 1/2 a tablespoon of non iodised sea salt with 1 cup of boiled water and allow it to cool.

What to do!
My piercings survived Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Alice Cooper, Turisas, Skindred, Alice in Chains, Placebo and Gary Numan.... BUT NOT a Pendulum moshpit! @.@

One of my dermal anchors just above the collar bone got knocked and almost came out - now it's hanging out a little. I've tried pushing the anchor further in but the metal ball attachment and the thread droop out still. It's just happened so I've cleaned it and propped it up with some plasters, but what should be my next step? Likely to be saved, or should I have it removed?

If I got it removed is it possible to allow the skin to heal and get it redone?

Any comments immensely helpful
Peace~K

Koliver-yes, you can take it out, let it heal, and have it re-done. I would suggest going to your original piercer and have them look at it, just so they know what 's going on. When you get it repierced, it's just a bit more difficult, because of the scar tissue buildup. just make sure you keep neosporin on it to keep the area soft.

This advice is great! It gives me all aspects of getting a micro dermal piercing. So I've been looking to have four hip micros done [for about two years now] (two on each side) because I fell in love with the look of them!
I've done some heavy research emailing professional piercers and even writing up a paper about all the information I've found, but the more advice the better! I had a few questions: Being that I'm a virgin to all this body piercing, is four too many to start out with? I'm really active in sports (a lot of running), one piercer I asked said take it easy for one week, is that long enough? Last question, I was thinking about getting the piercings done in May, would I be able to swim that summer?
Sorry that I almost wrote a novel, but I just want to make sure that what I want is the right decision! Thanks!

i got 5 dermals done yesterday one on my hang which didnt hurt at all and i love it and one on each side of my belly button. Now i feel as one of my jewels arent as deep as another kinda hard to explain but on some its like flat with the surface of my skin but some seem to poke out a little not alot just wondering if thats normal cuz its on my belly or is this something i need to go back and see if its in deep enough. Though i only did them all yesterday and there barely sore

August 9th 2010 18:19
@ the first anonymous under Amanda S: If you choose to have these done i would take it easy for at least a month and i would band aid them when doing any type of sports. With mine i had 1 done first to see how my body would cope and then 2 weeks later had my other 2 put in at the same time so maybe try that but have 2 put in first and then go back a few weeks later to have the other 2 done.
@ Anonymous under that: How long ago did you remove it? How did you remove it as in what equipment did you use? Is the lump painful or pusy looking at all? I removed one of my own anchors due to the short end rejecting after over 6 months of having it and there was a small bump where it was rejecting for a couple of weeks after it was removed but it settled down and disappeared after about 3 weeks of having my dermal out.
@ Anonymous above me: They are very new so there will be some swelling causing some of them to be really flat against your skin and others won't feel as flat depending on where they are. My belly ones (top of belly button and 1 on each side) the side ones swelled and bruised quite badly but the top one didn't! If they are sticking up more than about 3mm band aid them for a few days otherwise they will heal sticking out a little further than they should. If it is only 1mm sticking out, that is not such a bad thing as if they heal with the top directly on the skin it will be hard for you to change the tops on them because the post that the top screws into will be level with your skin and you won't be able to hold the post with a special tool and unscrew the top as i know from experience with 1 of mine. Also this tiny gap allows for better healing and allows you to clean them a little easier. If you are still unsure go back to your piercer and have them double checked.

Hey I was thinking of getting one done on the web of my hand, does anyone have this or know of any experiences with it? I have got my tongue, tragus, nose, ears & bellybutton pierced. Has anyone any of these piercings done & got a MD on their hand to advise me on how painful it would be lol

Thanks

Comment by PiercedEm

August 10th 2010 17:39
@ Anonymous, I do not have a md on my hand web but would personally advise against it as you use your hands a lot so there is more chance of rejection in that area. Your hands also come in contact with a lot of bacteria so a higher infection rate is also a risk, on the other hand you wash your hands a lot and that could also cause issues because of the chemicals in the soap. There is also a higher chance of bumping a piercing there and also getting it caught on things. It is really your own choice as to whether you have it done or not. As for pain, everybody has a different pain threshold to different piercings and even different piercings in the same area (one of my ear cartilage piercings hurt less than 1 put just below it for example) so how much it hurts will depend on your own body and also the area being pierced. You should talk to a reputable piercer that has the experience and knowledge of doing dermals to weigh up the pros and cons of having it done there and then make up your own mind.

hi there everyone. I got a madison anchor which is a microdermal in the neck/throat area a little over a month ago. I was advised to do 2 saline soaks a day and have had nothing but good times with it. no washing with soap or constantly worrying about it. a soak in the morning and a soak at night for about 5 minutes each time and my piercing is doing amazing. I get so many compliments on it as well. ESPECIALLY from the older crowd, which is bizarre. my 72 year old grandmother is in love with it; she thinks it's so pretty aha. so if you want to get one, just go for it because they're so easy to take care of once you get used to the saline soaks

@ treeza i would suggest you go back to your piercer and have them look at it and get their professional opinion as to what to do. In the meantime try doing a chamomile tea soak, there are instructions here: Really Long Link
scroll down and you will see it.
I have had a few issues with mine the last couple of days and the chamomile soak has fixed it up.

@ MsAngie I would suggest you find a piercer that is experienced in dermal piercings and set up a consult with them. Ask them all the questions you have and discuss the placement with them. Everyone's body reacts differently to piercings and how well they turn out will depend greatly on the piercer as well as you looking after them and following the proper aftercare.

@ Anonymous1 YES you can fly on a plane, they are just like any other piercing.

@ Anonymous2 I have 3 on my tummy and they don't affect sexual activities so i assume having them on your hips shouldn't be a huge issue as long as they are fully healed and you're not rough in the bedroom.

I'd like to know just how painful this really is?
I know they say everyone's pain tolerance is different yada yada yada. So I'll just flat out say, I am a GIANT wimp. I've gotton my tounge pierced which did not hurt at all. but then i got my lip pierced, and that hurt so bad i could actually feel the skin ripping.

I really want this peircing. But if it hurts anymore then getting your ear lobes peirced i just can't do it.
So pleaseee be honest. How much will it hurt?

I was thinking of getting a MD anchor on my chest (below my throat, above my cleavage.)
Does anyone else have these? How have they been, after the initial piercing? Are they constantly sore, always rejecting, or just bugging you continually? What are the things I should avoid and be careful for? I just really wanna know how people with the piercing already are dealing with it, how they feel, etc so I know what to expect.

Anything would be appreciated! Thank you!

Hello all.
I got 3 microdermals done about 3 years on the top of my back. The bottom one was never put in deep enough so I would catch it on things from time to time. I accidentally yanked that one out a few months ago. Friday, I had the rest of my back done (I had 9 put in). My question is…Does swelling affect how they initially lay on your skin. I have a few that look great (flush to the skin) and a few that are crooked. The girl that pierced me said it’s because of the swelling. Has anyone else had this happen? And if so does it correct its self or do I need to have them fix them?

Thanks so much for any help you may be able to give me.

@Annonymous re: Hip dermals, It is quite early days and there may be swelling for anywhere up to a week or more. MMine around my navel swelled and bruised quite badly for about a week at least after having them done. If they are still swollen in another 3-4 days or if they start weeping anything that isn't clearish in colour then go back and see your piercer. You shouldn't be overly concerned at this point i don't think.
If you are really quite worried then go see your piercer about it as they will be able to advise you better.

I have three stars on my wrist that are fairly small but would like to get three done, one inside each of the stars so that when they heal, I can have three different colored gems. They are on the under side of my wrist.

From reading everything and seeing videos.. I'm quite terrified to be honest.. I have six tattoos, my belly button, nose and ear pierced, so why am I scared? Possibly the fact of the implant/piercing would be permanant and the fact of needing to get them surgically removed.

I've considered this because it looks cool... how small do the anchors get? Because I'm starting to think there is NO WAY I can get all three stars done... maybe the largest one. It's probably a 1/4" big.....

Help/Advise?

I just got 4 microdermals on my hips yesterday! I love them!!! To anyone who was wondering about how to take care of them... My piercer told me that redness is common and the puss that comes out of them is just the white blood cells and the healing of it. It doesnt mean it is infected unless you get a red spot away from the area. Also to clean it dont use anything and dont cover the area. The healing process is taking place inside the body so theres nothing you can do to the outside. The cleaning products you can buy are just to waste your money. To keep them in good shape all you have to do is have good personal hygiene and a healthy diet!

i've had two dermals on my left hip for just over a year now (haven't had money to get the other side done again haha). and to be honest. it as the least painful piercing i've ever gotten in my life. less painful than my ear lobe. no joke. you definitely need to keep cleaning it no longer how long you've had it. lately mine have been getting read and swollen and sore so i'm hoping they're not rejecting, but it is possible. theres no way to be sure they will never reject. it all depends on your body and how you clean it.
if you get a hip piercing make sure you get a flat disc as opposed to a ball. i have the flat discs and it still has gotten stuck on things.
it got caught on a string from a blanket once, and it took me awhile to get unstuck, pretty painful.
anyway thats my two sense.
also, being told not to clean it is ridiculous. obviously you can't clean the inside but you have to clean the skin around it. i got my hips done at axis body mod and they not only gave me sea salt, they also gave me a soap that claened it. sea salt only disinfects, it doesn't clean. the soap is the only thing that has ever helped my piercings stay looking beautiful.

Your not suppose to clean it with anything other then body soap in the shower when you wash... Meaning the good personal hygiene part.

Comment by Anonymous

but not just any body soap. there are some that are harmful to new piercings (while they're still healing). trust me. after having dermals for over a year, and going through periods of not cleaning them or disinfecting them with sea soap, they don't like that very much.

I got my MD done 3 weeks ago on my upper chest right below my neck, I haven't had ANY problems at all. It didn't even bleed! All I do is spray 2x a day with sea salt. Its never been red or sore, I was nervous about getting it done because of the pain but it wasn't bad at all sooo worth it. I definitely recommend doing research into piercers before choosing one because alot of them still are new at doing MD's, that there lack of experience in them can doom your piercing from the beginning. They do come in different sizes my piercer used one with a small anchor so if I ever decide to take it out it shouldn't be too difficult. Hopefully this helps someone..... if you really want one get one there worth it and the pain is very minimal, just remember if You get them In places where they can be easily hit or something will rub against it that can increase chances of infection/rejection/migration.

Hi all, just wanted to post my experience with my dermals. I had a 20 dermal (ten layer) corset done on my back a while ago. I am on the thinner side of average at 5'1 and weigh maybe 95lbs or so. It might be that I don't have much meat on my back but these piercings HURT.

The piercings started low on my hips (right above the pantyline) and end a few cm under the braline. Because it is hard to get even the same stencil to line up the same twice, I had all twenty done at once.

From what I read online, I was not expecting a lot of pain at all. People said they felt pressure or not a lot of pain... Well, let me tell you, I was SCREAMING the whole time I was in the piercing studio. Once when the needle went in and once when the dermal went in... and once when I felt the blood flowing down my sides and puddling under my belly. Three screams per dermal x twenty dermals = some very terrified people in the waiting room!

So, getting them done was a nightmare. The experience isn't always butterflies and rainbows.

BUT, I wanted to say that conversely, I have NOT had any trouble with infections, rejections or even pain afterward. My MDs are easy to take care of in that they don't snag or bump into things due to their location on my back. All I have to do is take some care when putting shirts on/taking high waisted skirts off.

I have been applying iodine once a day and washing with saline once a day. Everyone stresses washing with sea-salt saline for a reason! Honestly, it isn't hard to clean them on your back. For the first week, I would reccomend having a friend do it for you because they will be tender but after that, you can usually reach around and clean them in front of a mirror. I'd still suggest having a friend take a close look at them every two or three days for you, though.

Also, if you are using bandaids or gauze to cover your MDs, MAKE SURE it is something porous that can breathe. Not all bandaids (eg, waterproof) will let your dermal breathe and this is a sure way to get yourself mighty infected.

I want to say that there are strict laws on piercings in South Carolina, but I'm not sure about North Carolina. I know that in SC you have to be 21 for tattoos and piercings being allowed period is a fairly recent thing. I would just contact a local tattoo shop and ask. Plus, you want to ask around anyway, as not very many piercers are knowledgeable with implants and you don't want to get a piercer to just test out his skills on you without him really knowing what he's doing.

If you really want them you can just go to another state and get them done like I did. Hope this helps.

I live in NC and I got 6 on my hips last april and 6 done 2 days ago on my clavicle. I dont know who you were talking to but they are legal. However many peircers wont do them on people under 18 since they are considered more permanent than most piercings.
I get all my piercings done by Jason Mosley at Blue Flame tattoo in Raleigh. He is the top rated piercer at the top rated parlor in the whole county and he has been doing microdermals since they first came out. He used to do the hollow needle method, and now he does a dermal punch method where he punches it, then tapers the sides the feet of the bar go into and then places it. Mine have all healed very well, and I love all of them very much. 6 cost me $200, but that is a deal Jason cuts me because I am getting more than normal. Normally one cost around $50.
As for healing I keep mine covered with waterproof bandaids for a month, and take of the bandaids once a week for cleaning and then a new bandaid goes on as soon as the cleaning is done. When you clean them you do a saline compress and then you have to "Floss" between the gem and the skin to get out any crusties, its weird, and I had a hard time the first time I tried to do it to my hips (Luckily my dad is a doctor and I was living with him at the time which resulted in me walking out of my room with my shirt tucked into my bra holding gauze and saline saying "Daddy... Will you help my floss my piercings?" hahaha) but now its easy as pie since I got used to it. Before anyone asks, yes it hurts. But it only hurts for a second and then its fine. They will be sore, you will hit them on things, and you will catch them on stuff. But if you baby them and go right back to the starting of the healing process whenever they look bad they will be a-ok.

I've had two dermals on my hip for about 18 months now, and I've had very little trouble with them. They cost $160 in AUD for the pair, but that was with a locals discount, and the price varies with each piercer. I would recommend that if you do get the piercing that you return to the piercer every two weeks for the first two months or so, just to make sure that it's going well.
As for cleaning, I usually was mine with a cleaning solution that my piercer gives to all his customers, which is just like an antibacterial or disinfectant which also moisturizes the skin a little, so as to allow the skin to heal around it. But because mdis are still a relatively new piercing, there is no real uniform way on their cleaning or aftercare, and different pierces may disagree.

They are fairly easy to catch on clothing, and so for the first month you have to be extra careful when getting dressed, but I caught mine both countless times since they've been pierced and they're still ok.
They shouldn't come undone, but one of mine unscrewed or caught on something once and the top fell off without me noticing. But we just rushed to the closest piercer and got a new top put on it before the anchor was lost in my skin.
One thing that you have to be especially carefull with in dermals is that like all piercings they can get infected- which mine is right now thanks to swimming in dirty water >_<" but my piercer just recommended I see the doctor and begin a course of antibiotics otherwise take it out.
Overall though, I am so glad I got them done. I'm planning to get two more, one below each collarbone ^_^

I plan on getting dermal hip piercings in May which is about a month away from summer: (swimming, water recreation, etc.) So with a month under way into healing will I be able to swim during the summer at all?

Opinion: I love the look of two dermals on each side of the hips (four total). But since I'm new to this whole implants thing would one suggest that instead of getting all four done at the same time, that maybe I should get the first two done and wait a couple weeks? It's quite a bit of money to put down that first time, especially when I won't know how my body reacts to the piercings...

One thing never mentioned about piercings is aftercare: after the healing process. I'm not sure how it is for other piercings, but with MicroDermals it is always the initial stages that people seems to need help with. I wonder if aftercare is just as important to be aware of....

I've had MDs for 6 months now, and I've always been careful not to wash the area surrounding the MD with anything too potent (i.e. strong shower gels) or use deodrant / aftershave near the MDs. This could be paranoia, but I consider it good practise to not irritate the skin near the MDs just in case. (my skin isn't actually that sensitive btw)

I try to clean the underneath of the jewelry (the metal/plastic parallel to the skin) with the same wound-cleaner spray I used during the healing stage. I do this maybe once a month.

Was wondering if I wasn't cleaning it often enough???

----- I've had no trouble with the four MD piercings (alas one did get pulled out recently) which are above and below my collar bone. Perfectly sound and healed nicely, don't remember them bruising, getting infected, or feeling irritable. ------

In my opinion the best place to get a dermal is a throat dermal...I just got mine last night and i got it right on the dip or hole part between my collar bones it looks great and for me its in a place that i don't bump or really do anything with my hubby is a tattoo artist and piercer so he knows to just now play rough with me or n e thing while it heals and settles...that pretty much the only thing to worry about with having it there is to watch what your doing if your playing around with friends or when your putting on a shirt...i just have been keep the band-aid on it so it wont shift and so tht is wont get bumped and i've been wearing v cut t-shirts so that people can clearly see tht something is there nd to not do n e thing stupid lol....But on the back of the neck or the hips or stomach i would think would have a higher regection rate due to the fact that those areas are always being moved or laid on or having your pants over them....Thts why i chose my throat cause nothing is ever messing with it except my necklaces which aren't long enough to touch it
But all in all i love it and i def would recommend it to someone who is really into piercings but i wouldn't recommend it to someone who is just starting out with piercings...i had about 8 piercings before i finally decided i wanted it...it was kinda an experimental thing to see how my body reacted to the piercings and never did my body reject any of them...just some of them i decided to take out cause most of them were on my face and i can only stand so much metal on my face and in my mouth lol.....I was so scared it was going to hurt tht i made my sister get hers first....and my hubby was surprised because i have so many piercings and tattoos and most of my piercings are by me...and i always fall asleep when i get tattoos no matter where they are...but when i laid down on the table i closed my eyes and just breathed and held my sisters hand told my piercing to stick me with the needle....after about two minutes i opened my eyes nd asked my piercer if he was done...he laughed..i didn't really feel a thing...the dermal punch just kinda felt like he was shoving a dull nail into my skin...but then again the pain depends on who you are and what your pain tolerance is...that's why you should def get a few piercings before deciding to get an implant....tht way you can start to get used to needles...do your research first don't just jump into it...you don't want to regret it later...=)....and as for work and school...I work at a factory and they dont care about my piercings and tattoos which is nice...and im in cosmetology school so to me my body art is my beauty...but if u have a job or school which u cant wear your piercings...there are always alternative such as just wearing a band aid over them or getting clear or nude colored jewlery....

What if I wanted two microdermals on my lower back where my dimples are? Will that be at any high risk for infections or anything going wrong? Because I had my belly button pierced twice and the piercing was rejected. ): with that being said I am just afraid of any complications

afer i finished my first lot of anti biotics again the infection came back,
The peircer told me the metal was titanium but the doctor says theres no way its titanium.
i went to the docs to get it removed and hes refused, the hospital have also refused to touch it and the shop i had it dun wont remove it as they dont remove pericings any more!!!!! si im stuck with a microdermal under my hand which im constantly reacting too and its making me ill!!!!
ive got an app at a private clinic on tuesday but what if they refuse to remove it.

DON"T USE BACTINE SPRAY! Bactine spray is for cuts and scrapes. Any piercer that recommends you use that doesn't know what he/she is talking about. Bactine spray will try and reject the piercing as that's what it is made to do for Bacteria. I wouldn't recommend anything but soap and water and a saline solution.

Hey I'm really interest in getting one of these, the only thing is I cannot wear the jewelry while I am in classes. It's a trade school college that doesn't allow visible piercings.

So my question is which threading would be least visible if I take it out-- for like a three hour lecture class? The one where the jewelry screws into the base or the other way around?

You can purchase nude colored inserts for it...i went to job corps where i couldnt wear any of my piercings but i did any way lol...except my lip...but you can purchase clear ones i believe to....or depending on wear u are getting it...just wear a bandaid over it...I just got mine about two weeks about and i've been wearing a bandaid over it when i am in bed or playing with my dogs....and mine is on my throat....but with the bandaid it just looks like their is a bandaid there nd if they wanna complain about tht then their are replacement gems to like i said nude or clear ones...Tht was my big thing when i went and got mine i was scared if i would be able to get a job with it but i figured ill just put a bandaid over it or something...cause piercings and tattoos are a big part of who i am nd im not gonna let a school or job prevent me from doing what i want to me body...im planning on gettin two more dermals next weekend...I just love them and with the right amout of TLC they wil turn out amzing =) and they dont swell up or hurt the next few days after getting it...like a tounge or lip piercing do...just get it in a practical spot that doesnt have a lot of movement or that you dont bump into or mess with alot...

I have had my dermals alittle over 2 months now. I have 2 on each hip. Last night out of no where one of them got this like pinching feeling and it still feels that way today. If I sit or stand still it doesnt hurt, just if I move a certain way. I never had any problems with them before and they are healing great. I was just wondering if anyone knows what that would mean or if I should go back to my piercer and have him check it out?

I've been cleaning it twice a day with a saline soak just as my piercer told me to do.

It might be a silly question but I was wondering if micro dermals give off a bad odor... i know it's not the same as getting an ear gaged but that reeks like non other! and if micro dermals are like that at all, that would definitely put me out of getting one!

I want to get two of these piercings! They are soo beautiful. I want to get 2 behind my ear/neck close to the hairline. Is this a high impact place? Meaning is there a good chance of rejection, infection, etc...? Also, if my hair is down or up will the pulling of my hair create problems? What about shampooing/conditioning my hair int he shower that will probably get into the piercing will that effect it??
I know lots of questions, but would really appreciate any advice!!

Thank you!!

Hey guys! I just got a dermal about a week ago, I actually got it on my toe!! It looks really cool, and I love this site! Very helpful! But I want to make sure mine doesn't get infected, because of the very unusual spot I got mine my piercer didn't even think it would last this long! The skin around it is dry though, is that bad? So to all of the people who didn't get infected/rejected how did you clean yours? I clean with salt water, (it heals me really fast) and use alcohol to wipe it down especially after I wear shoes.

****Anonymous(above me)
the pain is NOT as bad as many people say, like i said mine is on my toe!! a very sensitive spot! my toe bled A LOT!! but, what can you expect? you just had a hole cut into your skin. it was definitely worth it for me, I couldn't be happier!

I have a MD on my cheekbone. I've had it for almost a year now, never really had any problems except for the normal pussing in the beginning. Last month I noticed a reddish, purple, gray area right on top of where the anchor is under my skin. I thought it would go away and it has yet to diminish. It is not infected, is not pussing, and doesnt hurt a bit. So I don't know what to do now because I don't want to get it removed. I still love the piercing but this bruised looking area is quite obvious. Is this permanent? Should I go back to my piercer? I can tell the anchor underneath is pretty close to the skin so I'm wondering if that's causing the discoloration...if so, would i have to get it removed and replaced so it's deeper? I can change the top very easily with no problems and the base is flat and aligned with my skin and doesnt protrude out. I'm just worried the discoloration is permanent. Can someone please advise me to what might be causing this and if I need to take action to fix it? Thanks

I have 12 piercings total and I have a very low tolerance against pain but I like the feeling of the needle going through me. I was wondering if getting an implant would feel the same, because I don't want/ like pain... I didnt really like the thought that it's implanted into your flesh but my college professor has one and now I am very fasinated with MD Implants... I'm very skinney, no matter how much I eat I just can't put on weight because of my metabolism and I was wondering how that would affect the implant if I choose to get one. And I am very weary about it shifting somewhere else or my body rejecting it...

To the girl who was wondering about getting the piercing because of her weight... I too am a very petite girl. I have had my mds on my hips (4 of them) for almost 5 months now. I never had a problem with them. My piercer told me as long as I eat healthy and have good persoanl hygenie then I shouldnt have any problems with them. The pain though for me was very high, worse then getting my tattoo but the pain tolerance for everyone is different. Bleeding wise mine only bled the size of a dime for both piercings.

I just got a dermal in my suprasternal notch (the base of my throat). It looks like it's in a little too deep. I've thought about trying to pull it just a tiny bit out and sliding half of one of those circular bandaids under each side to keep the tip above my skin, but I'm not sure. Maybe I should just go see my piercer and see if the tip can be replaced with a larger one? Would I have to buy the larger tip?

Seems as if its migrating to the surface of ur skin which will result in ur body rejecting it. My cousins jus grew out itself jus popped out one day, it takes a while. From what I read it recommends to go to ur piercer when this happens to help prevent scaring but I'm not sure if u have to sooo when in doubt just go to the piercer n ask! Good luck! Jamie

Okay..so I have been planning on getting a microdermal near my ankle in a couple of weeks during my spring break. BUT after reading some horror stories about them, I am getting pretty nervous. I have a few questions that might reassure me if answered...

1. What do you think the chances are of having my implant get really irritated all the time in that location? I measured it out, and it would be almost an inch above my sock-line.
2. How much does it actually cost (approx.) to get this done?
3. Would I actually have to go to a doctor to get this surgically removed if I needed to, or would a piercer be able to do this? AND how much would that cost?

Thanks!

I had 6 microdermals on my back done a week ago, I got the corset piercing, there wasnt much pain, just a burning sensation when he was putting the anchor in. and I had no pain or soreness once they were in, i have not yet had any soreness, I wash them with antibacterial soap (dial) twice a day. i keep the small circle bandaids on them to keep them from snagging or popping out. my piercer said to keep bandaids on for at least a month. it took about 30 mins to get all 6 done 5 min for each piercing. i absolutely love my microdermals and would recommend them over a normal piercing they are less painful getting it done and afterwards!

This is an update, I was the one who posted in Dec who had just gotten 6 clavicle microdermals in addition to 6 hip ones from last april. My microdermals are doing wonderfully.

To answer some questions;
Yes, clean under your jewelry, be it a gem, disk, ball or spike. When you say it came out with the bandaid, do you mean the disk or the whole anchor? If the whole anchor came out go see your piercer, you shouldnt just gam pieces of metal in yourself willy nilly. As far as water/swimming I have 6 hip implants and I take bubble baths all the time. I got them last april and still occasionally get some crusties, and the bubble baths actually help them get washed off.

You shouldnt not have jewery in it, thats very dangerous because (As you probably realize at this point) it allows your skin to grow over it. You should call around to any and all piercing parlors and ask them if they have a disk to replace it with until you get a matching one.

If you have a big lump on it you should see your piercer. It might be scar tissue. One of my new(er) ones had scar tissue under it and I put tea tree oil on it and made sure it was getting under the disk every day and eventually it cleared up.

My son has a microdermal implant just below his eye on the cheek bone. He has had the piercing since January 24th. It has been fine, but in the last couple of days, it has lifted a little bit, is a little red, and has a "knot" underneath it. He says it does not hurt but he is worried about it... What should we do...
try the salt water soak...He said something about having it removed. If he does would you suggest an actual plastic surgeon since they would be worried about scarring.... ???? Just a worried mom...

PLEASE HELP.:\
Okay so I just got 4 microdermals like a week ago,
2 on each hip.
The ones on my left side are fine, flat on my skin.
But the ones on the right are raised
The skin isn't red, or irritated or any of that, it doesnt hurt and I can't see that foot thing
But I can see the shaft/tiny rod thing, that the jewel is screwed onto.
Will it eventually go down?
Do I need to keep tape on them to hold them down?
Or do I need to go get them pushed in or something o.o
I've been searching for answers and no ones been able to help me.

for anyone who wants to know, the best thing to use on ANY piercing to clean it is sea salt and water. most other things are too harsh and will dry the piercing out (ex. rubbing alcohol). i have my tongue, nose, lip, and belly button pierced and i know from experience because the first time i got my belly pierced id only clean it with rubbing alcohol and it dried out and got infected all of the time. and it seems that tea tree oil can really help your microdermal heal too!

karlie26-
It's too early to tell if the dermals will go down, so you need to wait about a month and then you will most likely know how they are going to look from then on. If they are still raised as you described, there is really nothing you can do. I have one that does the same thing, and I can see the anchor under my skin still. It's been like that for several months and even had it looked at by my piercer. It will do one of two things depending on how your skin chooses to react. It will either come up completely through your skin, eventually rejecting it out. Or it will stay how it is now.I know you say you cant see the anchor underneath, but it's obviously being pushed out underneath, just from a different angle. Hopefully it won't get worst, but like I said, you should just keep an eye on it for awhile and see what it does for about a month. Also, if it doesn't bother the piercing, using something to tape it down at night should not hurt it and can actually be beneficial. Hope this helps.

Anonymous512- you have to wait until that area is COMPLETELY healed, and they will absolutely not pierce it in the same spot but they can do near the area.

zahra- you have a black eye.. and it takes just as long as a black eye takes to heal... weeks.

I had a MDI put in place above my eyebrow with the dermal punch method. I was told by my piercer that a punch is a better way of placing the piercing since it removes skin so you can replace it with the anchor. He told me if you use the needle method, it only pushes the skin aside to create the pocket for the anchor to sit in, thus creating a lump when it heals. I was told that my placement is very temperamental since there is a lot of movement above your eyebrows on a day to day basis. The punch method was not very painful for me, and I have a very low pain tolerance. I watched many youtube videos on anchoring before going to get it done, which freaked me out, but after having a thorough conversation with my piercer, I trusted him enough to get it done. I was told that the foot of the anchor going into the pocket would be the most painful part, but I did not find it to be that way. None of it really hurt the way I expected it to. It pinched, just as much as any other piercing, and burned a little bit after wards, but mine was only sore for about an hour. I did bruise, but very little since my piercer made sure to pinch my skin a bit around the site to bring the blood back to it. The bruise was light and was only there for a few days. I was also told to avoid putting a band-aid on it as it would put too much pressure on the piercing and not let it settle properly. One night I had to put a band-aid on it because I had hit it the night before and was worried that I was going to rip it out in my sleep. Talk about being paranoid! I've had mine a month now and so far everything has gone smoothly. I've been told not to soak the piercing, as the water will leak into the pocket and sit there, creating an infection. I just mixed up a saline solution with warm to hot water, and used a cotton swab (q-tip) to clean the surrounding area. It has removed all natural build up, and has kept it clean. I've bumped it a few times in my sleep and have worried about migration or rejection but so far, so good.
Anyway, Hope everyone who considers getting this piercing really does their research first. It is a great piercing to have, and it is one of my favorite piercings thus far.

I got two microdermals done on my stomach five days ago, and they look great! I haven't had any problems taking care of them. However, today I noticed a little bit of crust around the bottom of my jewels, which really hasn't happened since day two, and noticed a tiny little spot where my skin is a bit pinker on the side of one, and when I lift up the jewel on that side, it looks like there may be a little scab or something? I'm not sure whether I should try to unscrew the jewel and check it out. The area kind of throbs a little bit, but I'm not sure whether or not that's just because I keep thinking about it.

I'm pretty paranoid, haha, I just really don't want anything to go wrong, so I was wondering if someone could tell me whether I should be concerned?

Thanks!

if you jus got ur dermal 5 days ago then u shldnt even b touching it let alone lifting up the gem... thats how ur going to rip it out. ive had an eye dermal for 5 months now and it crusted n got pink and irritated at first too then it kinda scabbed... you should jus leave it alone and it will heal. if u run it under low pressure water it will get all the crusties away! ur jus being paranoid tho =P it will be fine if ur takin care of it properly.

i Have micro-dermals on my hips but the left side started to lean because my jeans kept pushing it and it was too late to fix that problem & eventually the dermal just pushed out on its own , so now it fell out & there a small hole , but i dont know whether i should let it close up & then go get the dermal redone or try to get it redone now while it still open ??/B]

If you think you're ready to change the tops for the first time, go back to your piercer. The gem will be screwed in very tightly, and if you try to unscrew it yourself you risk turning the foot of the anchor. Your piercer will determine whether they are ready to change once you go in, they'll have to hold the rod of the anchor while simultaneously unscrewing the gem. If it pinches too much while your piercer is trying to unscrew the tops, they're not ready. But since you've had them about a month, you should be alright. It just depends how much they've healed!

Microdermal piercings are semi permanent, meaning you cannot remove the foot at any time. However, you don't really need to remove them to play sports. Once they're healed you can play freely.

You say the mirco dermal implants are not permenant ?
Im looking to get one as part of a tattoo but not sure now how that would work if they have to be replaced as obvoiusly the tattoo is forever

They are SEMI-permanent, meaning you can't just take them out at any time like you could a regular surface piercing. The only way to remove a microdermal anchor is to have it removed by someone (i.e. your piercer). They do not have to be replaced.

I love all the information on this site!

I just thought I'd share my story. I'm not a newbie to piercing, but I am a nurse, so the hospital is pretty strict about no piercings besides 1-2 in each lobe. So goodbye to my industrial, conch, tragus, etc. So I decided to get two lower back MDs, in my back "dimples" and on either side of a tattoo.

I have my VCH done as well, and that really didn't hurt at all. But let me tell you, the MDs on the lower back killed me! I read a bunch of stories about how they weren't that bad, or didn't hurt too terribly, so I went in thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. It was. The piercing hurt and having the jewelry put in hurt as well.

But no complications, although they are only two weeks old. I did wear bandaids during the day for the first week, simply because I'm exposed to some nasty stuff at the hospital. I clean them twice a day, more when I work out. They are pretty much right on my pant line, and there isn't any irritation from that. I still feel them at weird times, like getting into my car. I am definitely still careful too. I do lots of sit-ups for work outs and they tolerate that well too.

And most importantly, they are ADORABLE! I have a butterfly tattoo and so one MD is on either side. It looks amazing. I'm definitely going back for more once these heal a little more!

Also, as a nurse, make sure the ones you get are MRI safe so that you don't have to have them surgically removed before getting one done!

I must agree that looking at this site was very helpful before I got my micro dermal! I'll give my story...

So I decided I wanted my hips pierced for my eighteenth birthday so I read reviews of an awesome piercer downtown and decided to go to him. The only bad thing about the location was that it was a 45 min. drive...oh well.

Anyways he (the piercer) puts me through some motion tests just to make sure the piercings are in a stable area. He marked them out to make sure they were even...

I only did two piercings on one hip, and I plan to do the other side once my current ones heal up. At first I suggested that I wanted one on each hip but he advised against it because if I wanted to do more piercings later there would be a high chance that the first piercing would reject due to irritation.

...I laid down on the table and he instructed me through some breathing exercises, then waited for my word to go... he punched one hole and slipped in the jewelry then did the other one.

As for the pain...I could compare it to an ear piercing. It didn't hurt. Maybe I have a high pain tolerance, but honestly I expected it to be much worse. Just remember to breath!

My piercer is very passionate about his work so he had me come back for check-ups 2 days after the piercing, then 2 days after that just to make sure nothing was wrong. (definitely took a toll on my gas tank).

The aftercare is fairly simple...he told me to buy 1 liter Aquafina bottles have one be a "rinse" and the other be a "salt" solution. 1 liter = 1 teaspoon of non iodized salt. He also gave me a mild soap I could use in the shower and specifically told me to use it at the end of my shower (when my hands are the cleanest), scrub it in my hand first then apply it with my fingers starting with the piercing then gently moving outward.

The band-aids stayed on until my third appointment (so 6-7 days). By that time I had little circles around my piercings which kind of burned and got crusty. (Oh I forgot use the CVS brand band-aids that are "sheer"). They have lightened since then but now I'm wondering if they will ever go away or if they'll scar cause that will suck... Anyone know if they will go away? I suppose I can always ask my piercer but i like to hear other people's opinions...

I thought I would share with you all my anchor experience.

I had 7 anchors, all for about a year and a half.

one on my chest
2 on my hips ( below my pants line)
2 on my hips above pants line
and 2 centered below my belly button about an inch apart.

I have a very experienced piercer, he did a great job. We used both methods or piercing (the punch and the needle method)

I personally think the punch method is less painful. Both methods hurt, however its a very fast pain and then its over.
All of my dermals healed beautifully except the 2 below my pants line. They were constantly being irritated by my clothes. Both of them rejected. They felt just like any other piercing that becomes infected, and eventually my body just spit them out. Easy as that.

All of my others were fine. I am sad to say I had them removed yesterday. All personal reasons as to why I removed them.

I had all of my dermals long enough that they were solidly embedded into my body. I had to go to a doctor to remove them. All of them but the one in my chest had to be cut out with a scaple. I had to get a few stitches in each one also. Removal was painles since she numbed them first, today theyre quite sore.

If youre considering getting them, I absolutally loved mine. If you plan on getting them I would suggest to make sure its a long term thing, and be prepared to have them cut out as a removal option.

So I don't know if anyone knows this but I just learned this useful bit of info....if u have an anchor or a skindiver and it rejects DO NOT get re pierced in the same spot because scar tussue is dead skin cells, if u try getting re pierced through the scare tissue the jewlery will reject again almost garanteed....I know this from personal experience....if ur piercer tells u to let it heal and then have it re pierced they are just trying to get more money....don't make the stupid misteak I did and get a second opinion if u need to

If it looks "wonky" just wear bandaids over it until it sits straight, make sure you make the bandaid tight so that it pulls the piercing in the right direction, and after a few days it should sit straight! If not, just go back to your piercer.

Hi. Well I'm getting my lower back dermals and I just wanted to know a few things before I get them,
1. Do they hurt really bad?
2. Is it easier to get rejection in that area?
3. How long would I have to wait until I can change it?
4. And can I still exercise when I just get them pierced,or can it simply get infected by sweat?
Thanks.

Anonymous:
1. It really all depends on your pain tolerance. If you have a high or even normal pain tolerance, it's likely you'll only feel some pressure, and maybe some pinching.
2. Rejection in that area isn't too risky, the area doesn't really move all that much, just be careful not to forget they're there!
3. It's different for everyone, a month, maybe. It all depends on how your body heals.
4. You can exercise regularly with them, just make sure to clean them once you're finished exercising!

I got my first dermal stud put in a week ago. I've been taking super good care of it and clean it twice a day with sea salt water, and sometimes rub a q-tip with 70% alcohol on it if i feel like it's gotten contaminants around it. It's a cleavage dermal, but not at the top like most girls get. Its at the bottom, very understated. Anyhow, I'm starting to think that the gem we put on was too small because it's sunken in and I'm afraid my skin is going to heal over the top of it! Should I go get a bigger one put on to prevent this? or will it eventually heal under the gem?

Hey my name's Deanna and I am thinking about getting 2 MD piercings on one side of my hip. But I am a trampolinist as well as a lifeguard. I currently have a belly button piercing which I can easily take out for trampolining. But with the MD, could I easily cover it with plasters or a bandage to make sure it doesn't get caught? I train twice a week but won't be going for about 4 weeks so I'd say now's the right time to get them, what do you think? Also, as a part of being a lifeguard at a swimming pool, I have to attend training once a month which includes getting in the water, as well as when having to save someone (which I haven't done yet after working for 1 year as a lifeguard). So what are the guide lines for the healing process and swimming with them? Any comments would be really helpful! Thanks guys <3

Kira - not sure about whether the placement would be good or not, that's something you'd have to ask your piercer! But you can swim in the ocean with them once they've healed a bit!

Deanna - you'd have to make sure they're covered every time you performed, however getting them done on your hip may not be the best idea because of all the moving you'll be doing. As for getting in the water, you'll have to wait a bit because standing water can get inside the piercing and cause problems while it's healing.

Hello,

I am going this coming week, to make an appointment for a Microdermal Anchor, beside my left eye.

I know the risks of rejection, and all that.
But I was just wondering about much it will hurt to get it there?

Thank You.

I just got mine done yesterday It is in the middle of my chest a bit above my cleavage and I LOVE ITTTT!!!! <3 So much more painful that I thought though haha well not ''painful'' but the tugging on my skin to get it in was weird and scared me quite a bit. I didn't expect that at all haha IDK what I expected I guess lol I think maybe where I got it was a harder place bc the skin isn't as stretchy? Anyone else have that experience? It isn't getting crusties and already look healed. It isn't sore or bruised or anything. It looks perfect so I'm so happy about that. I can't wait to change the jewelry.

can you get microdermal peircings above your nipple? i havent seen anyone with them, but i have these ugly scars above my nipples and instead of having to get them surgically removed, i thought why not cover them up with a small gem. what do you guys think of this, is it poossible?

i was wanting to get two dermals on the back outer side of my ankle. i was wondering if the dermal would move while healing because of the movement in ur ankle and also it does not have much flesh there, is that bad as well?

I am interested in getting a set of snakebite MD's! I have had my labret pierced but removed it due to irritation and damage to my gumline. I am hoping this will be a better solution, but don't see any posts regarding this area. I see a TON of hips, cleavage, and undereye, but not much around the mouth. Also has anyone ad one ON the lip? I saw an MD on the lower lip, and it looked gorgeous. Being a mucus membrane, I would think this is HIGHLY risky...anyone know anything?

Can you take a shower after having dermal anchors put it? What do you do if you decide to get pregnet and will it cause rejection or problems to the implants? And if they reject can you still keep them by doing something if yes then what? Thnx

You SHOULD take a shower after getting them put in, standing water (in baths, pools) is not good for them while they are healing. You may or may not have to get them removed during pregnancy, it all depends on where the anchors are.

You should be fine dancing, just be careful about snagging.

I had bandaid scars for about three weeks, but had to stop wearing bandaids completely. If you still have to wear bandaids, try getting hypoallergenic or latex-free, you may be allergic. Try switching up how you place them, also. If you're not wearing them and are still really concerned, talk to your piercer or a dermatologist.

I got an implant called the Christine (obviously it's a very fleshy area# and it was fine when i got it like 6 months ago or more. Now, however it is infected #red and pussy). I need to know if i should have it removed, go to the dr or self treat with antibacterial products. I didn't see anyone else on here with a implant there so i couldn't refernce anything. Help!

Hello I am thinking about doing an implant on my ring finger as a sort of engagement/wedding ring as I am allergic to my actual ring. Is the metal used to do an implant hypo-allergenic? I have my traegus pierced with surgical steel and its my only piercing that I have never had a problem with... Just wondering if anyone knows about rejection due to metal allergies?

The procedure in the microdermal video at the top is completely fucked, I have a microdermal and i see microdermals being done all the time ( im a tattoo artist) and they never bleed that much, that guy was almost gushing blood, a little is normal but to the point where the piercer has to apply pressure for that much time, geesh. This makes dermals seem way more painful than they are, mine was done in a few mins and was probably less painful than any other piercing.

Quick questions I wanted to know um if your dermal implant were to be infected how would it look and if so how soon?

Also does this piercing depend on the parsons body will it reject how high of a wrist is it for these piercings to get infected or to reject, also I had noticed at the top there is different kinds of um jewelry like a stud to a big diamond or a flat surface on?

I just wanted to know can you pic what one you want to get put in? Or do you have to have the a cretan kind for it being my first dermal implant. Last of all things LOL I was looking to get the microdermal implants so how would the piercing process go?

I got a micro on my chest about a month ago and it has had some problems healing. I use h2ocean to clean it. it looks like it has a perfect circle bruise on it that seems like it won't go away. Sometimes it will be red too.

I got my wrists done and it was a very easy procedure. You should clean 2-3 times a day with a saline solution of 1/4tsp sea salt without iodine to 8oz (1cp) water. Be sure and "floss" underneath piercing so it doesn't work it's way toward the surface. You can wear any type of BREATHABLE bandage if you have the piercing in a high traffic area (my wrists get bumped a lot) you can also ask your piercer if they remove dermal anchors. In Alaska our laws are less strict on surgical piercing procedure so you can go into the piercing shop and have then removed. I got mine done three days ago and they are pain free, healthy, over all I would definitely recommend this piercing to anyone

I had a monroe piercing and went back to have it changed for a smaller one. The other piercer at the place said a md would be better so that's what he put in. It has been about 3 weeks. It is not sore unless bumped but the leg of it is still visible and it is a little red on the surface of that area. I clean it faithfully with antibacterial soap, saline solution and I don't mess with it otherwise. I don't know if it is trying to reject or not. My piercer is an hour away and I plan to go see him soon. If I put tape/bandaid on it to hold it down would that help any? Seems like it might. Help!!! I love it and don't want to have it removed. I am considering getting my belly button done the same way.

Help/Is this normal/Should I be concerned?

I got a dermal under my eye Friday (today is tuesday early early morning).

It seemed my experience was off...Watching videos they all seemed quick. Mine was done with a punch, and I obviously couldnt see what was happening but he seemed to be struggling with that even and there seemed to be a peice of my skin that wouldnt come off or somthing and he just pulled it off. (Not sure how normal that is or not.)

He spent I would say 5-10 minutes trying to get the base/foot of the dermal under my skin. He said he couldnt get it deep enough. It was done, whatever. And later looking in the mirror I noticed it didnt sit flush with my skin and it stuck out a little.

Today it looks like its sat closer now but my biggest concern is, under the gem I am almost certain I see the foot of the dermal. I dont know how normal that is. It seems like its not normal to me. It was sore the first day but it doesnt hurt, its not red, it looks alright. But I just swear I can see the metal...

Is that just part if the healing? Do I have a big chance of rejection? Is there anything I can do to help it if somthing is wrong?

I got 2 titanium dermals, out of a planned 5 derma anchol project in my tattoo, on my side about 2 months ago. I researched these for about a year prior to getting them, hesitant about rejection, migration, infection. These made 5 piercings I have total, not including ears, or the other 3 planned dermals.

So about a week ago (two at most) the lower dermal (sits about naval height on the hip) started to crust arounnd the sides of them gem. Orignally i thought this was the skin growing around the dermal like we're all told they will do, so i removed it from the sides of the gem. The next day, the crust was back. I realized this must be piercing "crust", basically forming from the piercing leaking whatever it is most of the leak at least once. Thought, um okay. Well the dermal started to get about a nickle sized red circle around it and would have the crust on the sides every day for the past week, even though i was cleaning with water and a Q-tip.

I texted my piercer photos and told him about what was happening and he told me to come in. Scared of infection and also losing my dermal i went into my piercer today. He squeezed it and a small amount of puss came out, he said the dermal needed to be removed and there was a pretty good chance of infection, the longer i wait, the worse it would get. So i let him remove it as he saysihe could put it back in within a week most likely. The removal was simple, a tug and it popped right out, no worse than getting it pierced, in fact maybe a little better. However, he had to squeeze all the crap that was under the piercing out of my skin and even needed to use a needle to drain it! OMG that was 10 times worse than any of my piercings or the removal.

I believe the infection was my fault for bumping it every day against my desk, and/or swimming in lakes/rivers. Not to mention this is a high move area.

Would anyone that went through all that continue with my 5 dermal project and hope i take care of them better. Or remove the one that is left, and will look badass with the other 4?

Hey I'm having a problem & I really need help. I've had a micro dermal piercing put in my lower back, I've had it for almost 2yrs now, i haven't changed it or nothing. I woke up yesterday and it felt quite sore so I simply salt soaked it and placed a plaster on it for the whole day because I felt I had probably irritated it during my sleep and I didn't want it being irritated again (in the past when it has felt sore I'd carried out that same procedure and it worked). However! I woke up this morning, removed the plaster and noticed a small amount of fluid had come out onto the plaster and now it looks as if it's sinking into my back! I'm really afraid and worried, I don't know what to do. I'm not sure if it's rejecting or infected I'm literally terrified, I don't know if I should get it removed, please, anyone HELP!

I got a "third eye" MD done 3 months ago. The first two months it healed great had no problems, but with it being on my forehead I have accidently snagged it on my shirts a few times and maybe once or twice on towels when getting out of the shower..about a week ago a noticed a small bump on the bottom left side of my dermal, I cleaned it with salt three times a day like I always do and just made sure it was nice and warm, but a few days went by and I could see the bottom edge of my anchor foot. I was my hands very well and put slight pressure on it until it re-aligned then I have been wearing a band-aid on it sense. It looks ok until I go a few days of not wearing the band-aid, then same problem you can see the foot again. I desperately want to save this dermal because I got it done as a religious statement and it is therefor extremely important to me, WHAT SHOULD I DO? My piercer is in NC and I moved to FL. I have only been doing the band-aid thing for a week, should I give it more time? Will it cause any problems if I continue to apply pressure to re-align it? PLEASE HELP!

I have two dermals on the dimples of my lower back and I recently lost the top ball on one of them. I left it a could of days thinking I would get around to goin back to the piercer without any problems. Well now the head has gone inside my skin and I screwed an old tongue ring I had and clipped the end so it would stick out out a little n not get completely lost. Is there a way to fix this and get a new ball or am I gonna have to remove it n redo it? I tried to pull on the bar I have sticking out in hopes of surfacing the dermal head but all I've done is make it swollen and sore. I'm running out of ideas!

random question - could you get a dermal in place of a lip piercing? or would it be better to get it through your lip (bottom to top)?
i want to get another piercing but my ears are small and i dont really have anymore room lol thinking about getting my lip done but i really dont want to damage my teeth - do lip piercings chip your teeth or is it only if you hit it by accident?

Hi, Im 15 and i really want MD's on my hips(just two total) but my mother says i should find comments or whatever from doctors or from older people. Brief: is there anyone over like 30 who got MD's young and still love them? and are there any doctors that have anything good or bad to say about MD's?
Responses would be VERY appreciated )))

-Person above me-
I have a lot of friends with lip piercings, and it all depends...one of my friends lip is disgustingly swollen on the inside. and the metal does scrap your teeth a bit but if you don't mind the feeling then go for it, but if you're the type to get chills when you file your nails or something, you might want to reconsider it....also, i wanted to get my lip pierced for the longest time, and i actually did pierce it despite what my parents said, and then i thought about some things, such as; when i kiss a guy, do i really want a piece of metal in the middle of it? and i also thought of the actresses that inspire me, and i said to myself "they are so naturally beautiful" and i just decided i didn't want any piercings in my face (because the metal will get in the way of my natural look). anyway, do what you please, this is just my opinion

JoJo - I had my dermals on my hips (two on each side) for almost a year. I loved having them and how they looked but I would never recommend for someone to get them. You have to be extremely careful when cleaning them and getting them bumped or hit hurts really bad. With you being 15 I would definately tell you to wait acouple years and see if you still want them. Once you take them out the scaring looks bad especially with it being on your hips. I had mine removed two months ago and still have scars.

Hey wondering if i could get some answers. Ive had my microdermal for 10 months now and i absolutely love it! Its on the back of my neck and ive basically had no troubles with it. Today i took a look at it (although its kind of hard to) but from what ive seen it seems to be a rejection but i cant really tell. On the longer side of the bar( under my skin) it seems to be purple in color, and when i grab the bar under the skin it seems almost as if its raising up. does this mean rejection? And is there anyway to stop it? I have a band aid on it but i dont know if it will help. Answers are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I had my first teardrop micro dermal yesterday, it was so painless it was surprising! it hasnt healed yet i dont think lol, but i was told to keep a plaster on for 3 days, then everynight after for about 3/6 months.. dont wet the area too much, & clean any crusty bits off with a lightly moist salt water cotton bud :

Your text goes hereYour text goes here I have hand my right and left hand the space between thumb and index finger done. Rejected 1 infected one had them removed and redone same story rejected and infected. I have my upper chest did super and had no problems healed in 2 weeks. Microdermals depends on the area they are in one more fatty with really no surface seems to fail where one like upper chest seems to strive. As for scars once removed rub the aera with cocobutter after healed work the scare tissue and it will surprize u not as bad as u think. As for pain for the microdermal all i can say is my mind made it to be a 10 and when done really was a 3. As for care i use seasalt. And dial antibactial soap. Seems they do better if u dont mess with them like 3 times a day and less they see of bathwater at first the better. But this is what i have learned. like i said 5 total here and think i got it down. in fact as of next week will be 6 and verses surface they rock

I got a anchor piercing under my arm like 4 weeks ago I have been cleaning it every day it was sore for a week but then the soreness went away, but now it started kinda itching and kinda sore again and pink around it. Is this normal? Like is this part of the healing process? I really don't want to take it out especially that i paid a lot of money on it and I like it.

I hope I hear back a positive response lol this is a cool piercing and I like telling people its my little button.
