Microdermal Implants

June 25th 2008 15:45
So here's just one more hardcore modification that once again involves implants. You've already seen subdermal implants, transdermal implants, and eyeball implants. Now, it's time to introduce microdermal implants.

by graphic.ward

Microdermal implants, which is also known as surface anchors have evolved from the techniques of pocketing, dermal anchoring, and transdermal implants. Basically, a microdermal implant is supposed to look like a transdermal implant, but be a realitively safe procedure, similar to body piercing. The end effect is to give the client the appearance that the jewelry is screwed into the skin.

Microdermal Anchors

The jewelry used is similar to transdermal anchors, but smaller. The base is flat with holes, which is supposed to aid stabilization of the jewelry. The tissues are meant to grow through and around the base of the jewelry, to increase stabilization and decrease risks of rejection. To minimize longterm risks, you want to make sure that the jewelry is made of titanium rather than a type of steel.

There are generally different styles of microdermal anchors. Some of them include:
1. One large hole with an longer, oval base.
2. One medium hole and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval base.
3. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval shaped base
4. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of hte screw with a curved base.

The microdermal implant procedure is pretty simple. I've seen two different ways to have the implant inserted. The first method is by inserting a beveled piercing needle at an angle into the entry/exit point, and the second method is by using a dermal punch. With either procedure, the hole is made and the microdermal jewelry anchor is insterted into the hole and coerced into the correct placement.

Microdermal Anchor Procedure with Dermal Punch

Some say that the microdermal implant procedure is no more or less painful than getting a surface piercing. The procedure does not involve using anesthetics or specialized tools.

You just want to make sure that you go to a qualified person who is well versed in surface anchoring.

by aceroypiel

As for healing a microdermal implant, the exact aftercare is not pinpointed to a particular technique, as the procedure is still pretty new. But, for the most part, you'll want to make sure to keep the area clean, dry, and free if irritants. Don't use lotions or sprays near the area, and you don't want to go swimming until the impant is healed, which can take 1 to 3 months.

Surprisingly, the difference between microdermal implants and transdermal implants and surface piercings, is that the rejection rate is much less and the sucess rate higher.

The related risks that you want to be aware of include:
* Inward Travelling Infection
* Deep Microdermal Placement
* Rejection
* Keloids
* Hypertrophic Scarring
* Bruising (temporary usually)
* Implant Rejection

i need to know a about the procedure a little more, like when a dermal punch of 1.5mm is inserted, is the skin pinched up and shimmyed on or do you cut pushing all the way down? then where should the rise of the peircing be 2.0 mm or 2.5mm on different parts of the body?

This procedure is really nothing to worry about
i have one above my cleavage. Its a fast and worry-free procedure. The way mine was done, using a tool made for these piercings, they punch a hole in your skin, now the term "punch" might sound painful, but they just push down on your skin for a second or two. It burns a bit but goes away pretty fast. After they insert the base, my pin was already screwed into it so he didnt have to mess with it while it was in my freshly cut skin, after using small clamps, they quilky insert the base into the hole made by the punch. Thats it ! It will be a bit sore for the day and also depending where you get it, might make you have to be careful, luckily mine didnt bother me much. I got mine done in the morning and left myself the day to just relax. There is hardly any pain, its just sore. This piercing is really amazing cause it heals really fast ! I was able to change my pin only a week after i got it done. I totally recommend this piercing to anyone who wants something easy and fast

I just got one on my ring finger as a form of engagement ring. The procedure its self hurt like hell but within a few minutes the pain was totally gone. It was a little sore to touch and hurt quite a bit when I would bump it. Now, a week later, it is pain free and looking great. I just hope it holds up considering the location. For after care I used a regiment of dial soap, saline solution, and bactine spray...It worked great!

ive just had a microdermal on the back of my neck. its been 3 days and its still a bit red, just wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect and the best ways to keep it infection free, at the moment in just using saline solution and antiseptic spray!

Comment by Whitney

August 10th 2009 21:31
Redness is to be expected. You just had major trauma to your skin. Keep with the saline. I wouldn't necessarily use the antiseptic spray.

i have four microdermals on my hips (2 on right, 2 on left) the pain was relativley nothing. one hurt, quite badly because the piercer hit a vein and that one gushed for a good 15 minuets haha. that one also bruied quite badly, but the other 3 were fine. i've had them for a few months now and they're doing well. every once in a while i'll wake up and one or 2 will be swolen and pussy, but if i wash them and spary them with sea salt, the swelling and pussing is gone by the end of the day.

sounds like a stupid question, but is it only only surgery how you can get them out? i really want a surface piercing but dont really know much about them =/ thanks x

October 13th 2009 13:32
For the most part yes. The tissues will grow through the base of the implant, and you won't be able to just pull it out.

Surface piercings are not implants. They are more temporary with a high risk of rejection and infection. These are more permanent, but do require a mild surgical procedure to have them removed.

I was wondering,
(this may sound stupid....)
But what hurts more in your opinion?
Toung // Hip?

Comment by Whitney

panda, I'm not sure what you mean by go funny. Please elaborate if you can.

Anonymous, hip will hurt worse and be less permanent depending on what method you choose to get it done.

Hey,

Thanks for all the great info on the page. I was thinking about getting 3 microdermals like in the first photo of the article, only a bit more spread out and lower, so they don't get disturbed by the camera neck strap

I have 2 problems, would be great if you could answer me
1. I get regular massages, i sit in front of the computer for many hours /day and i have some back problems. How sensitive are the microdermals after they heal? Do i have to give up massage in that area?
2. A friend of mine has 2, and said they lift up a bit after they get healed if it's not a "fleshy" area. And i am pretty skinny. Can this be a problem? On the back they would get hooked on clothes if that's the case i guess.

Thanks a lot for your time

Do the dermal piercings shift? i was told that after a certain period of time that they will start to shift underneath the skin.

Comment by Whitney

If not performed properly during implant, and if your body doesn't take to them, it is possible.

Comment by Whitney

December 1st 2009 20:31
Rux, once healed they should be fine. most of sensitivity will depend on your body and how it heals the implants. The lifting can be a problem if they lift enough to snag.

I just had one put in yesterday, right above my belly button. I thought I wanted a really tiny stone, but now i realize it is too small and need to change it to a larger gem. It is no longer flush with my skin but a bit sunk in.

1. Is it too early to go back and have my piercer change it to a larger 'tip' or 'head'?
2. What if I become pregant? Will that change anything?

BTW being on my tummy, it HURT being put in and now it is very sensitive when I bend or move...not too bad. I think it will be fine when it finally heals. I will love the look when it is a larger stone because unlike a belly button peircing, there isn't anything hanging out of the middle of my belly button.

Comment by Whitney

December 8th 2009 22:58
Yes, it's too early. If you become pregnant, you may experience rejection or migration.

okay so i went and had my hips pierced. one on each side. all he did was pinch my skin poke a hole and quickly place the jewlery inside of the hole. as he used a special tool to make the hole in my skin, yes it hurt but only while he was making the hole, putting the jewlery in didnt not hurt and they were never sore or hurt or anything at all after i left the shop. it was so worth those 5 seconds of pain! i love them

Ive had a microdermal on my face for over a year now. Its only ever got pusssie twice and didn't hurt when I first got it done. If your wanting something different I would seriously consider it because it looks really good and didnt hurt.

The price will vary on the artist, the shop you go to, and where you're putting them. Try contacting artists in your area to get a quote.

I had a microdermal on the back of my neck, about even with my shoulders. It's was done only yesterday, but everything is good so far, just a little bit of soreness. I heard that can be expected, so it's nothing to worry about, right?
I've kept it bandaged down so it doesn't shift, as they told me to. Just two bandaids in an "X" pattern. I change them once a day
I also clean it twice daily. In the morning when I shower with Ivory fragrance-free soap and before I go to bed with saline solution. Is there anything else I can do to make sure it doesn't reject? I'm really a fan of this piercing.

Also, the worst part of the procedure was when he wedged it in. The best thing to do is relax. It stung when I tensed up, so take deep breaths, most of the pain is in your head.

I have a 5 point star at the base of my neck at the collarbone just below the shoulder..if that makes sense. So i have 10 mdi's total. I love my star but damn these bad boys are alot of up keep for me. I wash everyday with soap and water and do a seasalt soak once a week. I couldn't imagine having these in a unreachable place because of that. For those of you thinking of getting them they do look badass but remove is very painful, in your head my ass. That shit hurts. But all in all I love them and obviously they aren't too much of a hassel or those bitches would be gone...

January 19th 2010 20:18
Removal will more than likely leave scarring, but the amount will vary on your body's tendency to scar.

The soreness afterward is normal. I'm a little surprised you were told to use bandaids, as this can cause the implant not to be able to breath properly.

I am thinking about getting two implants on my chest above dragonfly tatoos, is this a real sensitve area? and I was told it could take a year to heal???? I also just had a breast reduction and am in the process of working out and loosing weight. Will this affect the implant and cause more pain as I loose weight?

Comment by Whitney

January 25th 2010 16:42
It can take over a year in some cases. Healing will vary from person to person. The change in skin may have an effect on the implant. The area can be sensitive, but that will vary from person to person.

Has anyone ever had them reject? What can you expect to see or feel when it rejects? I have one on my finger, and it is healing well and has never been infected. I recently noticed that my skin around the piercing is dry and chapped, but I do not over-clean it (so that shouldn't be the cause of dryness). In fact, I don't use sea salt anymore, and only clean it when I normally wash my hands. It is not red or painful. I recently unscrewed the head off for a closer look, and I think I can sort of see the darkness of the metal bar underneath... Is this normal or possibly a sign of rejection?

I've had the implant for about a month now. I watch it carefully because I snagged it about one week after I got it and the entire thing came out, but I sterilized everything and put it back in place under my skin. I am paranoid that when I put it back in I might not have put it back right (deep enough) but I think I'm being paranoid because it fit in snuggly and I could feel it go right back into place. But since then I've been very afraid of rejection. Suprisingly it never got infected from the whole experience!

So if anyone can give me some insight as to what to expect to see if your body rejects the implant that would be great!

Comment by Whitney

February 2nd 2010 16:07
Rejection isn't as common, but you may experience soreness, redness, and the jewelry will start to push out of the body.

The darkness is probably scarring.

You are at a higher risk of rejection or migration because of the complications early on with the implant.

Lots of very knowledgeable information... I really enjoyed the read, comments, and replies. Sadly though when i tried to watch the piercing needle procedure the video was removed, I myself tried a "different" location than what I've seen and it turned out great until it got infected... I had a dermal implant in place of a lebret... unfortunately I got rather drunk that night and long story short I got beer in my fresh piercing... then it rejected.

I'm looking forward to talking to my piercer about trying the dermal punch method for my next microdermal.

In october I had three put in on my hipbone...and I have absolutely loved them! I had them done the dermal punch method, they hurt like hell to put in, but it was well worth it. At first I had troubles with them, the short end of the anchor was pointed down, and with my skin being so elasticy right there at the hip they would pop out. So, after struggling with them for a month, my piercer took them out and flipped them around and I havent had any problems! One of them, the middle one is slightly crooked, but not enough for anyone to notice but me.

I love these things!

i got mine done above my cleavage about 3-4 months ago maybe even longer and there was no pussing the only thing that bothered me was when i slept because it just felt really tight on my chest during the healing process. now today i noticed it was sore and i touched it and when i did puss squirted out and now it wont really stop and it hurts really bad i think i might have it infected.

i can feel it moving in my skin and its really freaking me out has this happened to anyone else??

I've had 2 microdermal anchers not quite on my hips, more inner and at first they had so many problems but then were completely fine. It's been over a year and so, and now one of them is starting to get irritated. It's been extremely sore and red; I can't even lie down on my stomach because it hurts =[ I put polysporin on it until I was told that shouldn't be placed on it; and then it started pussing too. I don't know if these are signs of rejection or if it's just irritated/infected and what I could do to prevent it?

Alright, I got a microdermal about a month ago, i got it done not with the dermal punch method but the other. They said they put it in "to soft" of a spot, because the gem came loose, fell off, and the implant sank into my skin where i couldnt visably see it. They had to anchor it out for two hours within 6 hours of me getting it. It didn't hurt too awfully bad, but I also have a high pain tolerance. It left a scar, but it only looks like a freckle.

Thats great advice, i was actully think about getting one on my tummy, butit makes complete since that the area is to soft. Plus i exercise alot and from what they tell me it could cause rejection or it to sink, but i never understand what they mean by sink thankss =]

My advice to you too above, is that you go to the place you got them done. When mine rejected, i went back and they ended up taking them outt. Its not good to have anything foreign or infected in your body, so you probly need to get it check out asap

Im so scared to get mine done. i want 2 or 3 on my stomach. Will i have to get surgery to get it removed if i wanted them out. or are they able to just be pulled out?? . Im only 15 i have my belly button done and it absessed but then healed withthin the next month. Will it do that to my microdermal. Im so nervous. And i excersize a bunch aswell but wiill that affect it at all.

I exercise alot myself...i dont have any problems with mine (I have three on my hip bone). Just make sure you clean them regularly...after exercising and such. If you ever have problems with them even getting slightly infected, just go back to your piercer, they know more about your skin and the way it heals around piercings than you do. when i first got mine done, it kept rejecting them, popping them out, and I found out that I was keeping the area (the skin around the anchor) soft by cleaning it alot...and keeping neosporin on it...and i only really needed to clean it morning and night, and neosporin every other day. Everyones skin elasticity is different. If your piercer is a good piercer he/she will recognize this.
Good luck!

i was thinking about getting a corset piercing and i was told to check out the microdermal option. Is hoop jewelry available? After it is healed could you corset it with a lttle tension? I want them down both sides about 12 on each side. so 24 total! How long do they last?
