Microdermal Implants

June 25th 2008 15:45
So here's just one more hardcore modification that once again involves implants. You've already seen subdermal implants, transdermal implants, and eyeball implants. Now, it's time to introduce microdermal implants.

by graphic.ward

Microdermal implants, which is also known as surface anchors have evolved from the techniques of pocketing, dermal anchoring, and transdermal implants. Basically, a microdermal implant is supposed to look like a transdermal implant, but be a realitively safe procedure, similar to body piercing. The end effect is to give the client the appearance that the jewelry is screwed into the skin.

Microdermal Anchors

The jewelry used is similar to transdermal anchors, but smaller. The base is flat with holes, which is supposed to aid stabilization of the jewelry. The tissues are meant to grow through and around the base of the jewelry, to increase stabilization and decrease risks of rejection. To minimize longterm risks, you want to make sure that the jewelry is made of titanium rather than a type of steel.

There are generally different styles of microdermal anchors. Some of them include:
1. One large hole with an longer, oval base.
2. One medium hole and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval base.
3. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval shaped base
4. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of hte screw with a curved base.

The microdermal implant procedure is pretty simple. I've seen two different ways to have the implant inserted. The first method is by inserting a beveled piercing needle at an angle into the entry/exit point, and the second method is by using a dermal punch. With either procedure, the hole is made and the microdermal jewelry anchor is insterted into the hole and coerced into the correct placement.

Microdermal Anchor Procedure with Dermal Punch

Some say that the microdermal implant procedure is no more or less painful than getting a surface piercing. The procedure does not involve using anesthetics or specialized tools.

You just want to make sure that you go to a qualified person who is well versed in surface anchoring.

by aceroypiel

As for healing a microdermal implant, the exact aftercare is not pinpointed to a particular technique, as the procedure is still pretty new. But, for the most part, you'll want to make sure to keep the area clean, dry, and free if irritants. Don't use lotions or sprays near the area, and you don't want to go swimming until the impant is healed, which can take 1 to 3 months.

Surprisingly, the difference between microdermal implants and transdermal implants and surface piercings, is that the rejection rate is much less and the sucess rate higher.

The related risks that you want to be aware of include:
* Inward Travelling Infection
* Deep Microdermal Placement
* Rejection
* Keloids
* Hypertrophic Scarring
* Bruising (temporary usually)
* Implant Rejection

i need to know a about the procedure a little more, like when a dermal punch of 1.5mm is inserted, is the skin pinched up and shimmyed on or do you cut pushing all the way down? then where should the rise of the peircing be 2.0 mm or 2.5mm on different parts of the body?

This procedure is really nothing to worry about
i have one above my cleavage. Its a fast and worry-free procedure. The way mine was done, using a tool made for these piercings, they punch a hole in your skin, now the term "punch" might sound painful, but they just push down on your skin for a second or two. It burns a bit but goes away pretty fast. After they insert the base, my pin was already screwed into it so he didnt have to mess with it while it was in my freshly cut skin, after using small clamps, they quilky insert the base into the hole made by the punch. Thats it ! It will be a bit sore for the day and also depending where you get it, might make you have to be careful, luckily mine didnt bother me much. I got mine done in the morning and left myself the day to just relax. There is hardly any pain, its just sore. This piercing is really amazing cause it heals really fast ! I was able to change my pin only a week after i got it done. I totally recommend this piercing to anyone who wants something easy and fast

I just got one on my ring finger as a form of engagement ring. The procedure its self hurt like hell but within a few minutes the pain was totally gone. It was a little sore to touch and hurt quite a bit when I would bump it. Now, a week later, it is pain free and looking great. I just hope it holds up considering the location. For after care I used a regiment of dial soap, saline solution, and bactine spray...It worked great!

ive just had a microdermal on the back of my neck. its been 3 days and its still a bit red, just wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect and the best ways to keep it infection free, at the moment in just using saline solution and antiseptic spray!

Comment by Whitney

August 10th 2009 21:31
Redness is to be expected. You just had major trauma to your skin. Keep with the saline. I wouldn't necessarily use the antiseptic spray.

i have four microdermals on my hips (2 on right, 2 on left) the pain was relativley nothing. one hurt, quite badly because the piercer hit a vein and that one gushed for a good 15 minuets haha. that one also bruied quite badly, but the other 3 were fine. i've had them for a few months now and they're doing well. every once in a while i'll wake up and one or 2 will be swolen and pussy, but if i wash them and spary them with sea salt, the swelling and pussing is gone by the end of the day.

sounds like a stupid question, but is it only only surgery how you can get them out? i really want a surface piercing but dont really know much about them =/ thanks x

Comment by Whitney

October 13th 2009 13:32
For the most part yes. The tissues will grow through the base of the implant, and you won't be able to just pull it out.

Surface piercings are not implants. They are more temporary with a high risk of rejection and infection. These are more permanent, but do require a mild surgical procedure to have them removed.

But what hurts more in your opinion?
Toung // Hip?

panda, I'm not sure what you mean by go funny. Please elaborate if you can.

Anonymous, hip will hurt worse and be less permanent depending on what method you choose to get it done.

Hey,

Thanks for all the great info on the page. I was thinking about getting 3 microdermals like in the first photo of the article, only a bit more spread out and lower, so they don't get disturbed by the camera neck strap

I have 2 problems, would be great if you could answer me
1. I get regular massages, i sit in front of the computer for many hours /day and i have some back problems. How sensitive are the microdermals after they heal? Do i have to give up massage in that area?
2. A friend of mine has 2, and said they lift up a bit after they get healed if it's not a "fleshy" area. And i am pretty skinny. Can this be a problem? On the back they would get hooked on clothes if that's the case i guess.

Thanks a lot for your time

Do the dermal piercings shift? i was told that after a certain period of time that they will start to shift underneath the skin.

Comment by Whitney

If not performed properly during implant, and if your body doesn't take to them, it is possible.

Comment by Whitney

December 1st 2009 20:31
Rux, once healed they should be fine. most of sensitivity will depend on your body and how it heals the implants. The lifting can be a problem if they lift enough to snag.

I just had one put in yesterday, right above my belly button. I thought I wanted a really tiny stone, but now i realize it is too small and need to change it to a larger gem. It is no longer flush with my skin but a bit sunk in.

1. Is it too early to go back and have my piercer change it to a larger 'tip' or 'head'?
2. What if I become pregant? Will that change anything?

BTW being on my tummy, it HURT being put in and now it is very sensitive when I bend or move...not too bad. I think it will be fine when it finally heals. I will love the look when it is a larger stone because unlike a belly button peircing, there isn't anything hanging out of the middle of my belly button.

Comment by Whitney

December 8th 2009 22:58
Yes, it's too early. If you become pregnant, you may experience rejection or migration.

okay so i went and had my hips pierced. one on each side. all he did was pinch my skin poke a hole and quickly place the jewlery inside of the hole. as he used a special tool to make the hole in my skin, yes it hurt but only while he was making the hole, putting the jewlery in didnt not hurt and they were never sore or hurt or anything at all after i left the shop. it was so worth those 5 seconds of pain! i love them

I had a microdermal on the back of my neck, about even with my shoulders. It's was done only yesterday, but everything is good so far, just a little bit of soreness. I heard that can be expected, so it's nothing to worry about, right?
I've kept it bandaged down so it doesn't shift, as they told me to. Just two bandaids in an "X" pattern. I change them once a day
I also clean it twice daily. In the morning when I shower with Ivory fragrance-free soap and before I go to bed with saline solution. Is there anything else I can do to make sure it doesn't reject? I'm really a fan of this piercing.

Also, the worst part of the procedure was when he wedged it in. The best thing to do is relax. It stung when I tensed up, so take deep breaths, most of the pain is in your head.

I have a 5 point star at the base of my neck at the collarbone just below the shoulder..if that makes sense. So i have 10 mdi's total. I love my star but damn these bad boys are alot of up keep for me. I wash everyday with soap and water and do a seasalt soak once a week. I couldn't imagine having these in a unreachable place because of that. For those of you thinking of getting them they do look badass but remove is very painful, in your head my ass. That shit hurts. But all in all I love them and obviously they aren't too much of a hassel or those bitches would be gone...

Comment by Whitney

January 19th 2010 20:18
Removal will more than likely leave scarring, but the amount will vary on your body's tendency to scar.

The soreness afterward is normal. I'm a little surprised you were told to use bandaids, as this can cause the implant not to be able to breath properly.

I am thinking about getting two implants on my chest above dragonfly tatoos, is this a real sensitve area? and I was told it could take a year to heal???? I also just had a breast reduction and am in the process of working out and loosing weight. Will this affect the implant and cause more pain as I loose weight?

Comment by Whitney

January 25th 2010 16:42
It can take over a year in some cases. Healing will vary from person to person. The change in skin may have an effect on the implant. The area can be sensitive, but that will vary from person to person.

Has anyone ever had them reject? What can you expect to see or feel when it rejects? I have one on my finger, and it is healing well and has never been infected. I recently noticed that my skin around the piercing is dry and chapped, but I do not over-clean it (so that shouldn't be the cause of dryness). In fact, I don't use sea salt anymore, and only clean it when I normally wash my hands. It is not red or painful. I recently unscrewed the head off for a closer look, and I think I can sort of see the darkness of the metal bar underneath... Is this normal or possibly a sign of rejection?

I've had the implant for about a month now. I watch it carefully because I snagged it about one week after I got it and the entire thing came out, but I sterilized everything and put it back in place under my skin. I am paranoid that when I put it back in I might not have put it back right (deep enough) but I think I'm being paranoid because it fit in snuggly and I could feel it go right back into place. But since then I've been very afraid of rejection. Suprisingly it never got infected from the whole experience!

So if anyone can give me some insight as to what to expect to see if your body rejects the implant that would be great!

Comment by Whitney

February 2nd 2010 16:07
Rejection isn't as common, but you may experience soreness, redness, and the jewelry will start to push out of the body.

The darkness is probably scarring.

You are at a higher risk of rejection or migration because of the complications early on with the implant.

Lots of very knowledgeable information... I really enjoyed the read, comments, and replies. Sadly though when i tried to watch the piercing needle procedure the video was removed, I myself tried a "different" location than what I've seen and it turned out great until it got infected... I had a dermal implant in place of a lebret... unfortunately I got rather drunk that night and long story short I got beer in my fresh piercing... then it rejected.

I'm looking forward to talking to my piercer about trying the dermal punch method for my next microdermal.

In october I had three put in on my hipbone...and I have absolutely loved them! I had them done the dermal punch method, they hurt like hell to put in, but it was well worth it. At first I had troubles with them, the short end of the anchor was pointed down, and with my skin being so elasticy right there at the hip they would pop out. So, after struggling with them for a month, my piercer took them out and flipped them around and I havent had any problems! One of them, the middle one is slightly crooked, but not enough for anyone to notice but me.

I love these things!

i got mine done above my cleavage about 3-4 months ago maybe even longer and there was no pussing the only thing that bothered me was when i slept because it just felt really tight on my chest during the healing process. now today i noticed it was sore and i touched it and when i did puss squirted out and now it wont really stop and it hurts really bad i think i might have it infected.

i can feel it moving in my skin and its really freaking me out has this happened to anyone else??

I've had 2 microdermal anchers not quite on my hips, more inner and at first they had so many problems but then were completely fine. It's been over a year and so, and now one of them is starting to get irritated. It's been extremely sore and red; I can't even lie down on my stomach because it hurts =[ I put polysporin on it until I was told that shouldn't be placed on it; and then it started pussing too. I don't know if these are signs of rejection or if it's just irritated/infected and what I could do to prevent it?

Alright, I got a microdermal about a month ago, i got it done not with the dermal punch method but the other. They said they put it in "to soft" of a spot, because the gem came loose, fell off, and the implant sank into my skin where i couldnt visably see it. They had to anchor it out for two hours within 6 hours of me getting it. It didn't hurt too awfully bad, but I also have a high pain tolerance. It left a scar, but it only looks like a freckle.

Im only 15 i have my belly button done and it absessed but then healed withthin the next month. Will it do that to my microdermal. Im so nervous. And i excersize a bunch aswell but wiill that affect it at all.

Comment by Amanda Schweim

February 25th 2010 20:06
I exercise alot myself...i dont have any problems with mine (I have three on my hip bone). Just make sure you clean them regularly...after exercising and such. If you ever have problems with them even getting slightly infected, just go back to your piercer, they know more about your skin and the way it heals around piercings than you do. when i first got mine done, it kept rejecting them, popping them out, and I found out that I was keeping the area (the skin around the anchor) soft by cleaning it alot...and keeping neosporin on it...and i only really needed to clean it morning and night, and neosporin every other day. Everyones skin elasticity is different. If your piercer is a good piercer he/she will recognize this.
Good luck!

i was thinking about getting a corset piercing and i was told to check out the microdermal option. Is hoop jewelry available? After it is healed could you corset it with a lttle tension? I want them down both sides about 12 on each side. so 24 total! How long do they last?

Comment by Whitney

March 15th 2010 17:56
Corset with any tension isn't a good idea.

Surface piercings don't last that long. Microdermals are more permanent, and after healing if you decide to remove takes a good bit of effort and procedure to cut out.

I'm not sure if you can purchase attachments for microdermal jewelry to have hoops.

i just had the cleavage done.. and it was painful. well the my piercer, he punched a hole, then he put the gem in and then he pressed it down and it hurts like hell. i thought he was about to break my chest! then later on he told me he punched a hole a lil bigger than the gem... so i don't know if that will be bad for healing process... but he said it would be fine, i just need to go get it check up with him again...

Ok, here's some answers for you all.
I had 3 microdermals done in January, one at the top of my belly button and one on either side of my belly button. One of them started to get infected a few weeks ago and I got some Cephalexin Antibiotic tablets from my doctor and then while taking the tablets, one of my other implants started getting infected. The antibiotics cleared both of them up. Then a few days after I stopped the antibiotics my 3rd implant got infected, this time I got Bactroban cream from my doctor and it worked a treat!
I they get infected, antibiotics work, they don't necessarily have to be removed.
About the ring type of jewelery, painfulpleasures.com offer rings that have a ball that screw onto the anchor.
And lastly, my piercer told me to clean it with nothing but plain water for at least 2 weeks and then to use a cleaning gel or saline and to keep it covered with a non stick gauze dressing and micropore tape. Up until my recent infections mine have been really great!
And yes, when i move the top of mine, i can feel it moving under my skin slightly. If i move it in a certain way, i can feel the anchor through my skin.

Almostunderoath, not too sure about the pregnancy thing.
If you get them on your back, you would have to try to clean them in front of a mirror or get someone else to clean them for you.
I've found the easiest way of cleaning them is with a wet, flattened out cotton ball so you can slide it under the top disc.

hey on the ring thing, i have a dermal corset, it consists of ten dermal anchors, each have their own pop of ring so you don't put any stress on the piercing when its not laced.

its expensive todo and not entirely painless and definately not for someone who hasn't been pierced before as looking after that many piercings at once is hard work.

but mines on my side, get it done with flat head before you change to rings and heve them in about three months before you ring it up as you want the implant to be completly settled into your skin.

and SALINE SALINE SALINE.
if any of them start not sitting quite as flush, just tape them down for a few days and they'll be fine =]

I just got micro dermals yesterday. It's under my collar bone. My piercer did them with the needle, it didn't hurt that much and i'm probably the biggest pussy when it comes to pain. The second one hurt a tiny bit more, and it was a bit harder to put the base in. But, they look amazing (the only thing i would change if i could, would be the distance from one to the other. Kinda wish they were further apart.) Anyways, the left one seems to be doing amazing, sitting flush to the skin... But the right one looked like it's a tiny bit raised... I'm not too worried. I keep bandages over them in the morning, for about five hours, and when i sleep. I will do the bandage thing for about a week or two, but i will keep the bandages on when i sleep, for about a month. I use a natural spray called ,"Dragon spray". It's amazing, smells great and makes my dermals feel like there's nothing there. I am a tad bit worried that they will maybe migrate because when i do my hair or put a shirt on, the skin moves there. I'm sure they'll be fine though.

ALSO, I HEARD THAT WHEN REMOVING MICRO-DERMALS... YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT THE SKIN. My piercer can gently put the needle inside the piercing, loosen the graphed skin and gently pull them out one base at a time. I feel sorry for whoever had to get them surgically cut out. That sounds fucking horrible.

My daughter has had several piercings, although her skin has always been sensitive to certain metals. She recently had a nape surface piercing which rejected ( due to the metal used by the piercer). She wants dermals, in her chest & were told it was a high risk area. Can you give me any information on that? I also read dermal piercings have a lower rejection rate. Is it really just a chance we have to take, a “just wait and see”. Any information would help.
Thank you

March 30th 2010 13:30
Stephy, when the tissue starts to grow through the base of the implant, it will be rather hard to just take a needle and pop it out.

Caryn, what sort of info are you looking for? Dermal implants do have a lower rejection rate than surface piercings. But, in general, each body is different. With any piercing it's a wait and see. Surface piercings are more of a wait till it rejects, not a wait and see if it heals.

@Whitney, yes I know the skin graphs through the base of the dermals. What I mean is he unscrews the jewel park, takes a special needle and loosens the skin. There are many ways to remove a microdermal, the most common just happens to be cutting the surface of your skin with a scaple.

Comment by Whitney

March 31st 2010 19:41
I have never heard of a "special needle" for removal. There is no way get the needle in except to puncture the skin all the way around the jewelry, and to go underneath to basically cut the tissues loose. Some will just cut right around the jewelry and just pull the jewelry out. There will still be a cut in the skin. It's not as easy to remove a microdermal as it is a piercing.

Comment by Stephyy

March 31st 2010 20:35
@ Whiteney, I called it a special needle because he removed some of my friends dermals by a needle. Not a scalpel. Sue me for not knowing the name of that specific needle. I have seen different places remove dermals different ways. At a place called Adrenalin they remove it by the way you described above; by cutting around the jewelry, then pulling it out. I slightly disagree with that way, because the small incision method seems a lot less painful and less scarring seems to form, and that's how I see most dermals removed. The way my piercer removes microdermals (I've seen him do it many times, because I tend to like to research my piercings before I get anything done, let alone a semi-permanent one like microdermals.) He takes the jeweled part off, dips the needle inside to loosen the graphed skin, does it to the other side if it has two sides to a base. Then he massages the base out. It's unnecessary to cut all the way around the piercing.
Anyways, I'm done for explaining this... As I really don't feel like arguing with anyone... Especially over the internet. I've seen this removal method done before (successfully) and you don't have to believe it.

On another note my microdermals are looking pretty good. The right one (the one that was not sitting as close to the skin as i wanted it to) is now flush to my skin. I'm sooo excited to change them! I've also seen some nude internally threaded jewelry online that I want to use for work... But what i'm wondering is... if you can change the jewelry to any 14g internally threaded head? Not sure.

Ooooh, yeah. I've seen the twisting method. That would hurt a lot. They do that at a place called ,"the fall". One of my friends went there and the guy did the twisting method (where you just twist the jewelry and then massage the base out). She told them to stop and we went to a different place.
She had bruising around the hole for a while. It probably traumatized her body.

I wasn't trying to be rude with the "special needle" that's just what you called it so I thought he used a needle that was different than a regular piercing needle.

A small incision is made around the jewelry and the needle or scalpel is used to cut the tissues. You are describing the same thing that I am. And, buy around, that doesn't mean all the way around, it means to some degree around the jewelry, typically one side.

Both methods are still considered more "surgical" than just removing the jewelry to a piercing. The tissues are still cut or sliced by some tool to get the jewelry out.

No one is arguing with you. I'm not frustrated or pissed or upset that there is another method than the common method. I'm just describing to you the method that I know, and you're describing the method you were explained. Two different methods for the same purpose. The practice is still relatively new and no one method is better or more right than the other.

I've had 4 microdermals in my stomach for about 3 months now. they healed quickly and I've never had any trouble with them. However, today I noticed the skin around one of them is pink and i can see where the ancor is underneath the skin (which I never could before.) It is also very sore and pussing a little bit. does this mean it is rejecting or infected? If so what should I do?

I got a microdermal done a month ago an inch below my eye. I went today to get the top changed but when the piercer tried to unscrew it he twisted the whole thing including the anchor;now its swollen, it throbes, and wont stop hurting. Should i wait it out to see if the swelling goes away or go to a doctor?

I had one done by my eye in jan and have had a go at trying to change the top, but it bloody hurts as i try to un screw it and feels like the whole thing under my skin is going to twist round, does that mean it hasnt taken fully yet?? i havent had any problems with it at all apart from hitting it a few times when washing my face and forgetting it was there which made it bleed.

It does sounds like it's rejecting.

The piercer has no clue what he's doing, doing go back to him.

It's not healing properly, and sounds quite irritated.

Z, It's highly likely to have them caught in pants and underwear when in that area.

I really want to get just one dermal on my hip. I want it lower though like below or right above my pant line. Are you allowed to get them anywhere you want or do they tell you it should be in a certain place? (I'm worried about the snagging on my pants)

I'm also concerned about the pregnancy thing. If they are that low I don't think they will be too much in the way, but do you have to remove them if you get pregnant?

Hey
This page has been very informative so far but I still have a question. I've been thinking about getting 3 micros on the back of my ear close to the hairline going towards my neck. I've been looking a different site for information and I think it is probably a risky area considering people tend to move their neck left and right thus stretching the skin where the micros would be sitting. But, I'll ask anyway... So my questions is, is titanium the only material used for micros or you could use plastic? I'm just asking because I tend to be paranoid about what could happen in the future, I wouldn't want to take them out if I were to get some kind of scan at the hospital...
Thank you

April 21st 2010 15:00
Z, yes it can potentially mess up the implant.

volleyballplayer, a bandaid won't protect against a ball

Anonymous, snagging is a big concern. Pregnancy probably not as much, but still potential. In general implants move with your skin where a barbel would get too small.

Anonymous, titanium and stainless are the best and safest options. plastic can harbor bacteria for healing wounds, and isn't recommended. They would need to be removed for surgery and scans. Some surgeons won't even allow retainers in piercings, so even if someone were to do a plastic implant, it's probably still have to be removed.

i recently got two dermals on my hip. only one bled so he sqeezed it after inserting the dermal to finish getting the blood out. he said it is expected to bruise, which it is, it looks like someone kicked me in my side its that big! and there is also a red spot next to my dermal, it looks like a blod clot? and when i feel it, its like a knot under my skin, what is it and what should i do? please help!

Anonymous, you should go back to your piercer and raise your concerns with them.
I have 3 around my belly button, 2 of which bled but my piercer didn't squeeze them 'to get the rest of the blood out'. As for bruising, mine were a little bruised and tender for quite a few days after i had them done but nothing as bad as you have described.
The piercer should be more than willing to have a look at it and give you advice but if that fails, your doctor may be able to help.
How long have they been done? And does it look to be infected at all? Sometimes (my own experience) the small lump next to it may be pus filled.
I hope I have been of help.

I just recently got two dermals on my collar bones. I had them done on Sunday and the only time I experienced any pain was during the piercing. I've been cleaning them daily. The one on the left looks a little raised and you can see a gray dot if you look closely which is the end of the foot... I went in to see the piercer today and they said that it doesn't seem to be rejecting since I'm not experiecing pain and its not red. Apparently it shoud get "sucked down into place" as it heals more. I was just wondering if that's true because I haven't snagged them on anything or had any pain or redness that would've led to rejection.

My new microdermal's are sticking out a wee bit to were I can see the bar. Is it all in my head? Or should I worry about rejection?

You just got the piercing. Why would it be healed near immediately. So, no it's not healed. You are just seeing the bar where the swelling may have gone down, or where the piercer didn't put them in deep enough, all depending on how much barbell you are seeing. You won't see any piercing or implant heal in one day.

Hi all,
I've had two MD for 2 1/2 years now, one on my wrist and one under my eye. I'm sad to say my wrist came out today. It has been awful, kept bumping it so it went crooked. Today I got it caught taking off my gloves (work in a hospital) and half of it came out. Don't worry it didn't hurt, I just went to my piercer and she just pulled it out. No needle, no scalpel. As big of a pain in the butt it was I will miss it. To those thinking about getting one done, make sure you really think about it first.

Common bacteria constantly attack them resulting in infection and one has recently decieded it no longer wants to be in its original position and has now moved! There is going to be potential problems with any piercing or implant. They may cause problems if you get pregnant, in terms of rejection or complication with the implant. I'm not sure if you would have to get them removed, that's something that you should talk to a professional about (just make sure that you definitely find someone who is familiar with them, not just a piercer who knows the process).

I'm not sure what you mean by non stop problems.

Non stop problems...as in problems that do not go away. Some people i hear complain about them after having them for a year.. and unlike other piercings there are not always potential problems, they heal..and you dont have to worry about them..but if i was to get dermals i wouldnt want to worry about them rejecting a yr down the road u knoe..

I have three on my hip. and i love them. i havent had a problem. i have had mine for about 9 months now, the first three months were rough, but it's just because my piercer put them in wrong. one they were fixed, everything has been great. if you want them on your hip, i would just suggest...be careful with them. watch your pants...just make sure you dont wear any that have a waistline right where the MD is. you risk ripping it out. round bandaids are a lifesaver for things like this. especially in the first few months, and with jeans. when in doubt, wear them, or risk accidentally ripping them out. The first few weeks the most vulnerable your MD is to be ripped out easily. just treat them with care and you'll be fine. i love mine.

OO... I haven't heard about constant problems with them, but when compared to piercings there are potentially less problems, especially surface piercings. And, yes, I agree that if you spend the money, I wouldn't want them to reject either, especially as that's more of a complication than it's worth (in my opinion). It's just something that you don't know what will happen unless you get them. More people have less problems with implants than with surface piercings.

Amanda, I'm glad you've had such an easy time with your. You definitely have to be careful of who you get to do them, as not everyone knows what they're doing.

Comment by Whitney

JayBehr, I've never really heard of anyone screwing off the jewelry. But I would assume that you would still see the metal screw that the ball screws into.

Heather, I would wait until completely healed. I wouldn't recommend soaking them in any body of water- pool, hot tub, lake, river, ocean, etc. until fully healed.

How long does it take them to fully heal? Like what is the average time. 1 month? 3 months? Thanks!

Comment by Amanda S

May 20th 2010 17:41
Jaybehr, I unscrew mine all the time...after they're healed, you really dont need to wear the jewelry all the time. Yes, you can see the ancor...its about the size of a pin top. Depending on how deep the piercer puts the anchor in would depend on how visible it would be (as to how far the base sticks out).
Heather-you can obviously take a shower and such...haha. water is good for it, but yes, be careful about the ocean, pools...stuff with alot of chemicals (chlorine) or filth (ocean or lake). If you want to swim, wear a waterproof bandaid, and make sure you clean the piercing really well after swimming, you dont want to risk infection. As far as healing, it depends on your body. Average it takes about 5 months for your fat cells to fully grow into the little holes on the anchor, thus anchoring it into your skin. Some people it heals faster. For me, it takes about three months. You can tell when it has healed...it feels secure, redness is gone, it doesnt hurt when you accidently hit it or move it...stuff like that. Hope that helps! This is all based off of me, i've not talked to anyone else...so others may have different suggestions.

Anonymous, Healing time will vary per person.

Heather, It's best to wait until the microdermal is fully healed, which will vary per person. They heal from the outside in, so you'll find in a lot of cases, they'll seem like their healed, but the inside of the implant may not be fully healed.

Anonymous, You can request titanium jewelry instead of the stainless. That should help reduce any irritation.

I was thinking about getting one on my finger, in between my knuckle and hand so it would be right were a ring would sit. I am wondering if this is a good idea because of the location. I understand that there are a lot of risk like if you bump it into something or snag it its going to cause a longer healing time, might cause scar tissue and could lead to an infection or it coming out.

So, it's been a month and some time since I first got my micros done.
The right one was odd looking and always had been and then it came out... I got it re-done and then a few days later the right one came out.
I got them both fixed... My piercer said that the reason why they came out is because he apparently didn't pierce them deep enough. Anyways, they're fixed now... But now I'm having troubles with the right now... Yet again. It's incredibly annoying to have to get them repierced and have to heal them. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it my piercers fault? He did them both by needle and I've been taking care of them religiously. I put bandaids on them for three days straight, putting bandaids on them at night. Cleaning them with "dragon mist" two times a day. The left one looks good... But the right one is giving me the same problems as before (reddish purple around the piercing, me needing to secure it with a bandaid so it heals straight)
Should I just get it re-done somewhere else? Or is it me that's fucking up?

Hey, this site is really informative, especially you Whitney. I have a question/inquiry..

I'm interested in getting a tiny black gem microdermal with my white ink tattoo behind my ear and on my wrist. I'm curious as to the location. I hear the inside of the wrist is a trouble area because of main veins running through it. Then the whole behind the ear one, I work retail and I'm a student so I'm consistently moving my head every which direction, stretching the skin behind my ears. I'm guessing my question is what is the risk really?

I also play professional paintball, I guess that right there is a big reason to consider placement. LOL

Also, price quotes? Like a general ballpark figure?

I got my dermals on my collarbones a month ago and had to get the left taken out due to it not being pierced deep enough, my problem or concern now is that the remaining one wiggles around when I touch it. Is this a problem or something of littlde concern? Also, it sits at a very slight angle, hard to notice unless you're over observant and OCD like me. So I was wondering, since it's only been a month could bandaids help them sit correctly or was that only for the first couple of days? I'd just like to eliminate any causes for snagging and is it ok if it gets very mildly irritated every once in a while, not red just a little tender to the touch on the top only. Thank you for reading this. (:

In the last week it has been gradually getting redder (it got quite a bang at a rave which seems to be the catalyst) and in the last few days started to puss a fair bit which i am gently squeezing out with cottonbuds dipped in saline. it seems to be about twice a day that needs doing.

Thinking about getting the third eye done. Wondering about shifting over time. Do you think because of the placement I will have problems with it later on down the road? I heard that because of it being in a high tension zone (In between the eyebrows, a lot of movement and pressure) that it would cause problems as your skin ages and wrinkles.. I'm trying to find out as much as I can before I get it done, because it would suck for it to mess up or something... really not fond of the idea of having a huge scar on my forehead, or having a piercing slowly slide down my face. :/

It is possible as the area of your implant has more movement and it's movement that you don't even realize in most cases. The more movement and potential irritation. Friction in the area, the more potential for complications.

Hey, I've just returned from the piercing studio in Chingford, London (most recommended, look up Addictions Tattoos) and am about to unveil the four little blighters I've stuck above and below my collar bone.
I have NEVER had any body modifications before, so this was pretty big for me to get anchors.

My experience: For anyone adverse to pain you will often have a anesthetic swab to take the bite off. The proceedure was pretty swift, a dermal punch was used to literally core out a tiny cylindrical fraction of skin about half a centimeter deep. The punch isolates the skin it cuts then pulls it out, not much of a problem under annesthetic. It's the kind of pain you have to breathe in and accept, the adrenaline will do the rest. =)

However I asked for the third anchor to be done without pain relief, and the pain was pretty damn sharp - it sent my body into shock and I nearly passed out. DON'T be scared by this! A good piercer will be able to look after you and coax you back to feeling safe, like I was. It only happened to me because of my inexperience I reckon, so don't be put off if you are already into bodymodding. I'm glad I asked for one 'real' piercing however, it's possible I might even have enjoyed it!

I've got cones and ball attachments on them. Be aware if you choose something like cones that stick out they won't be mirror images on either side of the body - the cone on the left currently points in a slightly different direction to the one on the opposite side. To be expected, don't feel let down, it's just your skin being unsymmetrical. I think it adds a flavour of peculiarity, which I like!

I thought htere'd be tonnes of blood, but apparently I didn't bleed half as much as most people! Think I was lucky tbh.

I found it helpful to talk to your piercer, ask them what they're doing right now to you, chat etc. It'll take the body load down a notch.

Finally, I'd adivse to prepare suitably - have an energy drink before going in, keep some in a bag to hand when you're having it done (if you're a wuss like me!) and eat a lot before and after. Wash yourself before going too, to be considerate. And of course go around as many websites and forum threads like this to be prepared. I watched some youtube vids, put me in an advantagous position of knowledge.

I'll update on soreness etc soon, up until now i've been really careful and walked like I'm a statue to get home! There is no pain now 4 hrs in, and I think a lot of people will agree that that is the case in most scenarios.

Hope this has helped!

Is it hard to have the piercer remove the one and move it closer in since its been 2months? Is it going to be more painful than have it initially done?? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Pain will vary per person, so it's hard to say. Generally, it is more of an ordeal to remove than to implant.

Mine didn't hurt at all, I actually enjoyed it...
And it wasn't sore at all, any time after I got it done.

I suppose the case above I'm asking does a labret share the same thread as a dermal anchor?
