Microdermal Implants
June 25th 2008 15:45
So here's just one more hardcore modification that once again involves implants. You've already seen subdermal implants, transdermal implants, and eyeball implants. Now, it's time to introduce microdermal implants.
Microdermal implants, which is also known as surface anchors have evolved from the techniques of pocketing, dermal anchoring, and transdermal implants. Basically, a microdermal implant is supposed to look like a transdermal implant, but be a realitively safe procedure, similar to body piercing. The end effect is to give the client the appearance that the jewelry is screwed into the skin.
The jewelry used is similar to transdermal anchors, but smaller. The base is flat with holes, which is supposed to aid stabilization of the jewelry. The tissues are meant to grow through and around the base of the jewelry, to increase stabilization and decrease risks of rejection. To minimize longterm risks, you want to make sure that the jewelry is made of titanium rather than a type of steel.
There are generally different styles of microdermal anchors. Some of them include:
1. One large hole with an longer, oval base.
2. One medium hole and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval base.
3. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of the screw with a oval shaped base
4. Two small holes on one side and one small hole on the other side of hte screw with a curved base.
The microdermal implant procedure is pretty simple. I've seen two different ways to have the implant inserted. The first method is by inserting a beveled piercing needle at an angle into the entry/exit point, and the second method is by using a dermal punch. With either procedure, the hole is made and the microdermal jewelry anchor is insterted into the hole and coerced into the correct placement.

Microdermal Anchor Procedure with Dermal Punch
Some say that the microdermal implant procedure is no more or less painful than getting a surface piercing. The procedure does not involve using anesthetics or specialized tools.
You just want to make sure that you go to a qualified person who is well versed in surface anchoring.
As for healing a microdermal implant, the exact aftercare is not pinpointed to a particular technique, as the procedure is still pretty new. But, for the most part, you'll want to make sure to keep the area clean, dry, and free if irritants. Don't use lotions or sprays near the area, and you don't want to go swimming until the impant is healed, which can take 1 to 3 months.
Surprisingly, the difference between microdermal implants and transdermal implants and surface piercings, is that the rejection rate is much less and the sucess rate higher.
The related risks that you want to be aware of include:
* Inward Travelling Infection
* Deep Microdermal Placement
* Rejection
* Keloids
* Hypertrophic Scarring
* Bruising (temporary usually)
* Implant Rejection

the skin is pinched up..i hav 1 on my neck...if u speak to a proper peircer they will able 2 explain to fully and also show u how its doneComment by Anonymous
i have one above my cleavage. Its a fast and worry-free procedure. The way mine was done, using a tool made for these piercings, they punch a hole in your skin, now the term "punch" might sound painful, but they just push down on your skin for a second or two. It burns a bit but goes away pretty fast. After they insert the base, my pin was already screwed into it so he didnt have to mess with it while it was in my freshly cut skin, after using small clamps, they quilky insert the base into the hole made by the punch. Thats it ! It will be a bit sore for the day and also depending where you get it, might make you have to be careful, luckily mine didnt bother me much. I got mine done in the morning and left myself the day to just relax. There is hardly any pain, its just sore. This piercing is really amazing cause it heals really fast ! I was able to change my pin only a week after i got it done. I totally recommend this piercing to anyone who wants something easy and fast

Surface piercings are not implants. They are more temporary with a high risk of rejection and infection. These are more permanent, but do require a mild surgical procedure to have them removed.

Thanks for all the great info on the page. I was thinking about getting 3 microdermals like in the first photo of the article, only a bit more spread out and lower, so they don't get disturbed by the camera neck strap
I have 2 problems, would be great if you could answer me
1. I get regular massages, i sit in front of the computer for many hours /day and i have some back problems. How sensitive are the microdermals after they heal? Do i have to give up massage in that area?
2. A friend of mine has 2, and said they lift up a bit after they get healed if it's not a "fleshy" area. And i am pretty skinny. Can this be a problem? On the back they would get hooked on clothes if that's the case i guess.
Thanks a lot for your time

1. Is it too early to go back and have my piercer change it to a larger 'tip' or 'head'?
2. What if I become pregant? Will that change anything?
BTW being on my tummy, it HURT being put in and now it is very sensitive when I bend or move...not too bad. I think it will be fine when it finally heals. I will love the look when it is a larger stone because unlike a belly button peircing, there isn't anything hanging out of the middle of my belly button.

I've kept it bandaged down so it doesn't shift, as they told me to. Just two bandaids in an "X" pattern. I change them once a day
I also clean it twice daily. In the morning when I shower with Ivory fragrance-free soap and before I go to bed with saline solution. Is there anything else I can do to make sure it doesn't reject? I'm really a fan of this piercing.
Also, the worst part of the procedure was when he wedged it in. The best thing to do is relax. It stung when I tensed up, so take deep breaths, most of the pain is in your head.

The soreness afterward is normal. I'm a little surprised you were told to use bandaids, as this can cause the implant not to be able to breath properly.

I've had the implant for about a month now. I watch it carefully because I snagged it about one week after I got it and the entire thing came out, but I sterilized everything and put it back in place under my skin. I am paranoid that when I put it back in I might not have put it back right (deep enough) but I think I'm being paranoid because it fit in snuggly and I could feel it go right back into place. But since then I've been very afraid of rejection. Suprisingly it never got infected from the whole experience!
So if anyone can give me some insight as to what to expect to see if your body rejects the implant that would be great!

The darkness is probably scarring.
You are at a higher risk of rejection or migration because of the complications early on with the implant.

Surface piercings don't last that long. Microdermals are more permanent, and after healing if you decide to remove takes a good bit of effort and procedure to cut out.
I'm not sure if you can purchase attachments for microdermal jewelry to have hoops.

I had 3 microdermals done in January, one at the top of my belly button and one on either side of my belly button. One of them started to get infected a few weeks ago and I got some Cephalexin Antibiotic tablets from my doctor and then while taking the tablets, one of my other implants started getting infected. The antibiotics cleared both of them up. Then a few days after I stopped the antibiotics my 3rd implant got infected, this time I got Bactroban cream from my doctor and it worked a treat!
I they get infected, antibiotics work, they don't necessarily have to be removed.
About the ring type of jewelery, painfulpleasures.com offer rings that have a ball that screw onto the anchor.
And lastly, my piercer told me to clean it with nothing but plain water for at least 2 weeks and then to use a cleaning gel or saline and to keep it covered with a non stick gauze dressing and micropore tape. Up until my recent infections mine have been really great!
And yes, when i move the top of mine, i can feel it moving under my skin slightly. If i move it in a certain way, i can feel the anchor through my skin.
Comment by almostunderoath
btw ive been wondering how i could clean them once i get em due to the fact their on my back(:
Comment by Anonymous
If you get them on your back, you would have to try to clean them in front of a mirror or get someone else to clean them for you.
I've found the easiest way of cleaning them is with a wet, flattened out cotton ball so you can slide it under the top disc.
Comment by Anonymous
its expensive todo and not entirely painless and definately not for someone who hasn't been pierced before as looking after that many piercings at once is hard work.
but mines on my side, get it done with flat head before you change to rings and heve them in about three months before you ring it up as you want the implant to be completly settled into your skin.
and SALINE SALINE SALINE.
if any of them start not sitting quite as flush, just tape them down for a few days and they'll be fine =]

ALSO, I HEARD THAT WHEN REMOVING MICRO-DERMALS... YOU DON'T HAVE TO CUT THE SKIN. My piercer can gently put the needle inside the piercing, loosen the graphed skin and gently pull them out one base at a time. I feel sorry for whoever had to get them surgically cut out. That sounds fucking horrible.

Caryn, what sort of info are you looking for? Dermal implants do have a lower rejection rate than surface piercings. But, in general, each body is different. With any piercing it's a wait and see. Surface piercings are more of a wait till it rejects, not a wait and see if it heals.

Anyways, I'm done for explaining this... As I really don't feel like arguing with anyone... Especially over the internet. I've seen this removal method done before (successfully) and you don't have to believe it.
On another note my microdermals are looking pretty good. The right one (the one that was not sitting as close to the skin as i wanted it to) is now flush to my skin. I'm sooo excited to change them! I've also seen some nude internally threaded jewelry online that I want to use for work... But what i'm wondering is... if you can change the jewelry to any 14g internally threaded head? Not sure.

A small incision is made around the jewelry and the needle or scalpel is used to cut the tissues. You are describing the same thing that I am. And, buy around, that doesn't mean all the way around, it means to some degree around the jewelry, typically one side.
Both methods are still considered more "surgical" than just removing the jewelry to a piercing. The tissues are still cut or sliced by some tool to get the jewelry out.
No one is arguing with you. I'm not frustrated or pissed or upset that there is another method than the common method. I'm just describing to you the method that I know, and you're describing the method you were explained. Two different methods for the same purpose. The practice is still relatively new and no one method is better or more right than the other.

This page has been very informative so far but I still have a question. I've been thinking about getting 3 micros on the back of my ear close to the hairline going towards my neck. I've been looking a different site for information and I think it is probably a risky area considering people tend to move their neck left and right thus stretching the skin where the micros would be sitting. But, I'll ask anyway... So my questions is, is titanium the only material used for micros or you could use plastic? I'm just asking because I tend to be paranoid about what could happen in the future, I wouldn't want to take them out if I were to get some kind of scan at the hospital...
Thank you

volleyballplayer, a bandaid won't protect against a ball
Anonymous, snagging is a big concern. Pregnancy probably not as much, but still potential. In general implants move with your skin where a barbel would get too small.
Anonymous, titanium and stainless are the best and safest options. plastic can harbor bacteria for healing wounds, and isn't recommended. They would need to be removed for surgery and scans. Some surgeons won't even allow retainers in piercings, so even if someone were to do a plastic implant, it's probably still have to be removed.

I have 3 around my belly button, 2 of which bled but my piercer didn't squeeze them 'to get the rest of the blood out'. As for bruising, mine were a little bruised and tender for quite a few days after i had them done but nothing as bad as you have described.
The piercer should be more than willing to have a look at it and give you advice but if that fails, your doctor may be able to help.
How long have they been done? And does it look to be infected at all? Sometimes (my own experience) the small lump next to it may be pus filled.
I hope I have been of help.

Heather, I would wait until completely healed. I wouldn't recommend soaking them in any body of water- pool, hot tub, lake, river, ocean, etc. until fully healed.

Heather-you can obviously take a shower and such...haha. water is good for it, but yes, be careful about the ocean, pools...stuff with alot of chemicals (chlorine) or filth (ocean or lake). If you want to swim, wear a waterproof bandaid, and make sure you clean the piercing really well after swimming, you dont want to risk infection. As far as healing, it depends on your body. Average it takes about 5 months for your fat cells to fully grow into the little holes on the anchor, thus anchoring it into your skin. Some people it heals faster. For me, it takes about three months. You can tell when it has healed...it feels secure, redness is gone, it doesnt hurt when you accidently hit it or move it...stuff like that.

Heather, It's best to wait until the microdermal is fully healed, which will vary per person. They heal from the outside in, so you'll find in a lot of cases, they'll seem like their healed, but the inside of the implant may not be fully healed.
Anonymous, You can request titanium jewelry instead of the stainless. That should help reduce any irritation.

The right one was odd looking and always had been and then it came out... I got it re-done and then a few days later the right one came out.
I got them both fixed... My piercer said that the reason why they came out is because he apparently didn't pierce them deep enough. Anyways, they're fixed now... But now I'm having troubles with the right now... Yet again. It's incredibly annoying to have to get them repierced and have to heal them. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it my piercers fault? He did them both by needle and I've been taking care of them religiously. I put bandaids on them for three days straight, putting bandaids on them at night. Cleaning them with "dragon mist" two times a day. The left one looks good... But the right one is giving me the same problems as before (reddish purple around the piercing, me needing to secure it with a bandaid so it heals straight)
Should I just get it re-done somewhere else? Or is it me that's fucking up?

I'm interested in getting a tiny black gem microdermal with my white ink tattoo behind my ear and on my wrist. I'm curious as to the location. I hear the inside of the wrist is a trouble area because of main veins running through it. Then the whole behind the ear one, I work retail and I'm a student so I'm consistently moving my head every which direction, stretching the skin behind my ears. I'm guessing my question is what is the risk really?
I also play professional paintball, I guess that right there is a big reason to consider placement. LOL
Also, price quotes? Like a general ballpark figure?

In the last week it has been gradually getting redder (it got quite a bang at a rave which seems to be the catalyst) and in the last few days started to puss a fair bit which i am gently squeezing out with cottonbuds dipped in saline. it seems to be about twice a day that needs doing.

I have NEVER had any body modifications before, so this was pretty big for me to get anchors.
My experience: For anyone adverse to pain you will often have a anesthetic swab to take the bite off. The proceedure was pretty swift, a dermal punch was used to literally core out a tiny cylindrical fraction of skin about half a centimeter deep. The punch isolates the skin it cuts then pulls it out, not much of a problem under annesthetic. It's the kind of pain you have to breathe in and accept, the adrenaline will do the rest. =)
However I asked for the third anchor to be done without pain relief, and the pain was pretty damn sharp - it sent my body into shock and I nearly passed out. DON'T be scared by this! A good piercer will be able to look after you and coax you back to feeling safe, like I was. It only happened to me because of my inexperience I reckon, so don't be put off if you are already into bodymodding. I'm glad I asked for one 'real' piercing however, it's possible I might even have enjoyed it!
I've got cones and ball attachments on them. Be aware if you choose something like cones that stick out they won't be mirror images on either side of the body - the cone on the left currently points in a slightly different direction to the one on the opposite side. To be expected, don't feel let down, it's just your skin being unsymmetrical. I think it adds a flavour of peculiarity, which I like!
I thought htere'd be tonnes of blood, but apparently I didn't bleed half as much as most people! Think I was lucky tbh.
I found it helpful to talk to your piercer, ask them what they're doing right now to you, chat etc. It'll take the body load down a notch.
Finally, I'd adivse to prepare suitably - have an energy drink before going in, keep some in a bag to hand when you're having it done (if you're a wuss like me!) and eat a lot before and after. Wash yourself before going too, to be considerate. And of course go around as many websites and forum threads like this to be prepared. I watched some youtube vids, put me in an advantagous position of knowledge.
I'll update on soreness etc soon, up until now i've been really careful and walked like I'm a statue to get home! There is no pain now 4 hrs in, and I think a lot of people will agree that that is the case in most scenarios.
Hope this has helped!

My piercings survived Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Alice Cooper, Turisas, Skindred, Alice in Chains, Placebo and Gary Numan.... BUT NOT a Pendulum moshpit! @.@
One of my dermal anchors just above the collar bone got knocked and almost came out - now it's hanging out a little. I've tried pushing the anchor further in but the metal ball attachment and the thread droop out still. It's just happened so I've cleaned it and propped it up with some plasters, but what should be my next step? Likely to be saved, or should I have it removed?
If I got it removed is it possible to allow the skin to heal and get it redone?
Any comments immensely helpful

I've done some heavy research emailing professional piercers and even writing up a paper about all the information I've found, but the more advice the better! I had a few questions: Being that I'm a virgin to all this body piercing, is four too many to start out with? I'm really active in sports (a lot of running), one piercer I asked said take it easy for one week, is that long enough? Last question, I was thinking about getting the piercings done in May, would I be able to swim that summer?
Sorry that I almost wrote a novel, but I just want to make sure that what I want is the right decision! Thanks!

@ Anonymous under that: How long ago did you remove it? How did you remove it as in what equipment did you use? Is the lump painful or pusy looking at all? I removed one of my own anchors due to the short end rejecting after over 6 months of having it and there was a small bump where it was rejecting for a couple of weeks after it was removed but it settled down and disappeared after about 3 weeks of having my dermal out.
@ Anonymous above me: They are very new so there will be some swelling causing some of them to be really flat against your skin and others won't feel as flat depending on where they are. My belly ones (top of belly button and 1 on each side) the side ones swelled and bruised quite badly but the top one didn't! If they are sticking up more than about 3mm band aid them for a few days otherwise they will heal sticking out a little further than they should. If it is only 1mm sticking out, that is not such a bad thing as if they heal with the top directly on the skin it will be hard for you to change the tops on them because the post that the top screws into will be level with your skin and you won't be able to hold the post with a special tool and unscrew the top as i know from experience with 1 of mine. Also this tiny gap allows for better healing and allows you to clean them a little easier. If you are still unsure go back to your piercer and have them double checked.

I have had a few issues with mine the last couple of days and the chamomile soak has fixed it up.
@ MsAngie I would suggest you find a piercer that is experienced in dermal piercings and set up a consult with them. Ask them all the questions you have and discuss the placement with them. Everyone's body reacts differently to piercings and how well they turn out will depend greatly on the piercer as well as you looking after them and following the proper aftercare.
@ Anonymous1 YES you can fly on a plane, they are just like any other piercing.
@ Anonymous2 I have 3 on my tummy and they don't affect sexual activities so i assume having them on your hips shouldn't be a huge issue as long as they are fully healed and you're not rough in the bedroom.

I'd like to know just how painful this really is?
I know they say everyone's pain tolerance is different yada yada yada. So I'll just flat out say, I am a GIANT wimp. I've gotton my tounge pierced which did not hurt at all. but then i got my lip pierced, and that hurt so bad i could actually feel the skin ripping.
I really want this peircing. But if it hurts anymore then getting your ear lobes peirced i just can't do it.
So pleaseee be honest. How much will it hurt?

I was thinking of getting a MD anchor on my chest (below my throat, above my cleavage.)
Does anyone else have these? How have they been, after the initial piercing? Are they constantly sore, always rejecting, or just bugging you continually? What are the things I should avoid and be careful for? I just really wanna know how people with the piercing already are dealing with it, how they feel, etc so I know what to expect.
Anything would be appreciated! Thank you!

I got 3 microdermals done about 3 years on the top of my back. The bottom one was never put in deep enough so I would catch it on things from time to time. I accidentally yanked that one out a few months ago. Friday, I had the rest of my back done (I had 9 put in). My question is…Does swelling affect how they initially lay on your skin. I have a few that look great (flush to the skin) and a few that are crooked. The girl that pierced me said it’s because of the swelling. Has anyone else had this happen? And if so does it correct its self or do I need to have them fix them?
Thanks so much for any help you may be able to give me.

my skin is around the gem at the top, and not around the bottom of the gem like expected?
is it anything to worry about?
will it heal on my gem or will it go normal after a while?
please reply i'm really worried!

If you are really quite worried then go see your piercer about it as they will be able to advise you better.

From reading everything and seeing videos.. I'm quite terrified to be honest.. I have six tattoos, my belly button, nose and ear pierced, so why am I scared? Possibly the fact of the implant/piercing would be permanant and the fact of needing to get them surgically removed.
I've considered this because it looks cool... how small do the anchors get? Because I'm starting to think there is NO WAY I can get all three stars done... maybe the largest one. It's probably a 1/4" big.....
Help/Advise?

if you get a hip piercing make sure you get a flat disc as opposed to a ball. i have the flat discs and it still has gotten stuck on things.
it got caught on a string from a blanket once, and it took me awhile to get unstuck, pretty painful.
anyway thats my two sense.
also, being told not to clean it is ridiculous. obviously you can't clean the inside but you have to clean the skin around it. i got my hips done at axis body mod and they not only gave me sea salt, they also gave me a soap that claened it. sea salt only disinfects, it doesn't clean. the soap is the only thing that has ever helped my piercings stay looking beautiful.

The piercings started low on my hips (right above the pantyline) and end a few cm under the braline. Because it is hard to get even the same stencil to line up the same twice, I had all twenty done at once.
From what I read online, I was not expecting a lot of pain at all. People said they felt pressure or not a lot of pain... Well, let me tell you, I was SCREAMING the whole time I was in the piercing studio. Once when the needle went in and once when the dermal went in... and once when I felt the blood flowing down my sides and puddling under my belly. Three screams per dermal x twenty dermals = some very terrified people in the waiting room!
So, getting them done was a nightmare. The experience isn't always butterflies and rainbows.
BUT, I wanted to say that conversely, I have NOT had any trouble with infections, rejections or even pain afterward. My MDs are easy to take care of in that they don't snag or bump into things due to their location on my back. All I have to do is take some care when putting shirts on/taking high waisted skirts off.
I have been applying iodine once a day and washing with saline once a day. Everyone stresses washing with sea-salt saline for a reason! Honestly, it isn't hard to clean them on your back. For the first week, I would reccomend having a friend do it for you because they will be tender but after that, you can usually reach around and clean them in front of a mirror. I'd still suggest having a friend take a close look at them every two or three days for you, though.
Also, if you are using bandaids or gauze to cover your MDs, MAKE SURE it is something porous that can breathe. Not all bandaids (eg, waterproof) will let your dermal breathe and this is a sure way to get yourself mighty infected.

I get all my piercings done by Jason Mosley at Blue Flame tattoo in Raleigh. He is the top rated piercer at the top rated parlor in the whole county and he has been doing microdermals since they first came out. He used to do the hollow needle method, and now he does a dermal punch method where he punches it, then tapers the sides the feet of the bar go into and then places it. Mine have all healed very well, and I love all of them very much. 6 cost me $200, but that is a deal Jason cuts me because I am getting more than normal. Normally one cost around $50.
As for healing I keep mine covered with waterproof bandaids for a month, and take of the bandaids once a week for cleaning and then a new bandaid goes on as soon as the cleaning is done. When you clean them you do a saline compress and then you have to "Floss" between the gem and the skin to get out any crusties, its weird, and I had a hard time the first time I tried to do it to my hips (Luckily my dad is a doctor and I was living with him at the time which resulted in me walking out of my room with my shirt tucked into my bra holding gauze and saline saying "Daddy... Will you help my floss my piercings?" hahaha) but now its easy as pie since I got used to it. Before anyone asks, yes it hurts. But it only hurts for a second and then its fine. They will be sore, you will hit them on things, and you will catch them on stuff. But if you baby them and go right back to the starting of the healing process whenever they look bad they will be a-ok.

As for cleaning, I usually was mine with a cleaning solution that my piercer gives to all his customers, which is just like an antibacterial or disinfectant which also moisturizes the skin a little, so as to allow the skin to heal around it. But because mdis are still a relatively new piercing, there is no real uniform way on their cleaning or aftercare, and different pierces may disagree.
They are fairly easy to catch on clothing, and so for the first month you have to be extra careful when getting dressed, but I caught mine both countless times since they've been pierced and they're still ok.
They shouldn't come undone, but one of mine unscrewed or caught on something once and the top fell off without me noticing. But we just rushed to the closest piercer and got a new top put on it before the anchor was lost in my skin.
One thing that you have to be especially carefull with in dermals is that like all piercings they can get infected- which mine is right now thanks to swimming in dirty water >_<" but my piercer just recommended I see the doctor and begin a course of antibiotics otherwise take it out.
Overall though, I am so glad I got them done. I'm planning to get two more, one below each collarbone ^_^

Opinion: I love the look of two dermals on each side of the hips (four total). But since I'm new to this whole implants thing would one suggest that instead of getting all four done at the same time, that maybe I should get the first two done and wait a couple weeks? It's quite a bit of money to put down that first time, especially when I won't know how my body reacts to the piercings...

I've had MDs for 6 months now, and I've always been careful not to wash the area surrounding the MD with anything too potent (i.e. strong shower gels) or use deodrant / aftershave near the MDs. This could be paranoia, but I consider it good practise to not irritate the skin near the MDs just in case. (my skin isn't actually that sensitive btw)
I try to clean the underneath of the jewelry (the metal/plastic parallel to the skin) with the same wound-cleaner spray I used during the healing stage. I do this maybe once a month.
Was wondering if I wasn't cleaning it often enough???
----- I've had no trouble with the four MD piercings (alas one did get pulled out recently) which are above and below my collar bone. Perfectly sound and healed nicely, don't remember them bruising, getting infected, or feeling irritable.

But all in all i love it and i def would recommend it to someone who is really into piercings but i wouldn't recommend it to someone who is just starting out with piercings...i had about 8 piercings before i finally decided i wanted it...it was kinda an experimental thing to see how my body reacted to the piercings and never did my body reject any of them...just some of them i decided to take out cause most of them were on my face and i can only stand so much metal on my face and in my mouth lol.....I was so scared it was going to hurt tht i made my sister get hers first....and my hubby was surprised because i have so many piercings and tattoos and most of my piercings are by me...and i always fall asleep when i get tattoos no matter where they are...but when i laid down on the table i closed my eyes and just breathed and held my sisters hand told my piercing to stick me with the needle....after about two minutes i opened my eyes nd asked my piercer if he was done...he laughed..i didn't really feel a thing...the dermal punch just kinda felt like he was shoving a dull nail into my skin...but then again the pain depends on who you are and what your pain tolerance is...that's why you should def get a few piercings before deciding to get an implant....tht way you can start to get used to needles...do your research first don't just jump into it...you don't want to regret it later...=)....and as for work and school...I work at a factory and they dont care about my piercings and tattoos which is nice...and im in cosmetology school so to me my body art is my beauty...but if u have a job or school which u cant wear your piercings...there are always alternative such as just wearing a band aid over them or getting clear or nude colored jewlery....

I want to get two of these piercings! They are soo beautiful. I want to get 2 behind my ear/neck close to the hairline. Is this a high impact place? Meaning is there a good chance of rejection, infection, etc...? Also, if my hair is down or up will the pulling of my hair create problems? What about shampooing/conditioning my hair int he shower that will probably get into the piercing will that effect it??
I know lots of questions, but would really appreciate any advice!!

1. What do you think the chances are of having my implant get really irritated all the time in that location? I measured it out, and it would be almost an inch above my sock-line.
2. How much does it actually cost (approx.) to get this done?
3. Would I actually have to go to a doctor to get this surgically removed if I needed to, or would a piercer be able to do this? AND how much would that cost?
Thanks!

To answer some questions;
Yes, clean under your jewelry, be it a gem, disk, ball or spike. When you say it came out with the bandaid, do you mean the disk or the whole anchor? If the whole anchor came out go see your piercer, you shouldnt just gam pieces of metal in yourself willy nilly. As far as water/swimming I have 6 hip implants and I take bubble baths all the time. I got them last april and still occasionally get some crusties, and the bubble baths actually help them get washed off.
You shouldnt not have jewery in it, thats very dangerous because (As you probably realize at this point) it allows your skin to grow over it. You should call around to any and all piercing parlors and ask them if they have a disk to replace it with until you get a matching one.
If you have a big lump on it you should see your piercer. It might be scar tissue. One of my new(er) ones had scar tissue under it and I put tea tree oil on it and made sure it was getting under the disk every day and eventually it cleared up.

On a scale from 1-10 being the most painful how bad was it?
How long did yours take to heal?
& does it wiggle easily if hit?
Comment by Karlie26
Okay so I just got 4 microdermals like a week ago,
2 on each hip.
The ones on my left side are fine, flat on my skin.
But the ones on the right are raised
The skin isn't red, or irritated or any of that, it doesnt hurt and I can't see that foot thing
But I can see the shaft/tiny rod thing, that the jewel is screwed onto.
Will it eventually go down?
Do I need to keep tape on them to hold them down?
Or do I need to go get them pushed in or something o.o
I've been searching for answers and no ones been able to help me.

for anyone who wants to know, the best thing to use on ANY piercing to clean it is sea salt and water. most other things are too harsh and will dry the piercing out (ex. rubbing alcohol). i have my tongue, nose, lip, and belly button pierced and i know from experience because the first time i got my belly pierced id only clean it with rubbing alcohol and it dried out and got infected all of the time. and it seems that tea tree oil can really help your microdermal heal too!

It's too early to tell if the dermals will go down, so you need to wait about a month and then you will most likely know how they are going to look from then on. If they are still raised as you described, there is really nothing you can do. I have one that does the same thing, and I can see the anchor under my skin still. It's been like that for several months and even had it looked at by my piercer. It will do one of two things depending on how your skin chooses to react. It will either come up completely through your skin, eventually rejecting it out. Or it will stay how it is now.I know you say you cant see the anchor underneath, but it's obviously being pushed out underneath, just from a different angle. Hopefully it won't get worst, but like I said, you should just keep an eye on it for awhile and see what it does for about a month. Also, if it doesn't bother the piercing, using something to tape it down at night should not hurt it and can actually be beneficial. Hope this helps.
Anonymous512- you have to wait until that area is COMPLETELY healed, and they will absolutely not pierce it in the same spot but they can do near the area.
zahra- you have a black eye.. and it takes just as long as a black eye takes to heal... weeks.

I just thought I'd share my story. I'm not a newbie to piercing, but I am a nurse, so the hospital is pretty strict about no piercings besides 1-2 in each lobe. So goodbye to my industrial, conch, tragus, etc. So I decided to get two lower back MDs, in my back "dimples" and on either side of a tattoo.
I have my VCH done as well, and that really didn't hurt at all. But let me tell you, the MDs on the lower back killed me! I read a bunch of stories about how they weren't that bad, or didn't hurt too terribly, so I went in thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. It was. The piercing hurt and having the jewelry put in hurt as well.
But no complications, although they are only two weeks old. I did wear bandaids during the day for the first week, simply because I'm exposed to some nasty stuff at the hospital. I clean them twice a day, more when I work out. They are pretty much right on my pant line, and there isn't any irritation from that. I still feel them at weird times, like getting into my car. I am definitely still careful too. I do lots of sit-ups for work outs and they tolerate that well too.
And most importantly, they are ADORABLE! I have a butterfly tattoo and so one MD is on either side. It looks amazing. I'm definitely going back for more once these heal a little more!
Also, as a nurse, make sure the ones you get are MRI safe so that you don't have to have them surgically removed before getting one done!

So I decided I wanted my hips pierced for my eighteenth birthday so I read reviews of an awesome piercer downtown and decided to go to him. The only bad thing about the location was that it was a 45 min. drive...oh well.
Anyways he (the piercer) puts me through some motion tests just to make sure the piercings are in a stable area. He marked them out to make sure they were even...
I only did two piercings on one hip, and I plan to do the other side once my current ones heal up. At first I suggested that I wanted one on each hip but he advised against it because if I wanted to do more piercings later there would be a high chance that the first piercing would reject due to irritation.
...I laid down on the table and he instructed me through some breathing exercises, then waited for my word to go... he punched one hole and slipped in the jewelry then did the other one.
As for the pain...I could compare it to an ear piercing. It didn't hurt. Maybe I have a high pain tolerance, but honestly I expected it to be much worse. Just remember to breath!
My piercer is very passionate about his work so he had me come back for check-ups 2 days after the piercing, then 2 days after that just to make sure nothing was wrong. (definitely took a toll on my gas tank).
The aftercare is fairly simple...he told me to buy 1 liter Aquafina bottles have one be a "rinse" and the other be a "salt" solution. 1 liter = 1 teaspoon of non iodized salt. He also gave me a mild soap I could use in the shower and specifically told me to use it at the end of my shower (when my hands are the cleanest), scrub it in my hand first then apply it with my fingers starting with the piercing then gently moving outward.
The band-aids stayed on until my third appointment (so 6-7 days). By that time I had little circles around my piercings which kind of burned and got crusty. (Oh I forgot use the CVS brand band-aids that are "sheer"). They have lightened since then but now I'm wondering if they will ever go away or if they'll scar cause that will suck... Anyone know if they will go away? I suppose I can always ask my piercer but i like to hear other people's opinions...

I had 7 anchors, all for about a year and a half.
one on my chest
2 on my hips ( below my pants line)
2 on my hips above pants line
and 2 centered below my belly button about an inch apart.
I have a very experienced piercer, he did a great job. We used both methods or piercing (the punch and the needle method)
I personally think the punch method is less painful. Both methods hurt, however its a very fast pain and then its over.
All of my dermals healed beautifully except the 2 below my pants line. They were constantly being irritated by my clothes. Both of them rejected. They felt just like any other piercing that becomes infected, and eventually my body just spit them out. Easy as that.
All of my others were fine. I am sad to say I had them removed yesterday. All personal reasons as to why I removed them.
I had all of my dermals long enough that they were solidly embedded into my body. I had to go to a doctor to remove them. All of them but the one in my chest had to be cut out with a scaple. I had to get a few stitches in each one also. Removal was painles since she numbed them first, today theyre quite sore.
If youre considering getting them, I absolutally loved mine. If you plan on getting them I would suggest to make sure its a long term thing, and be prepared to have them cut out as a removal option.

1. Do they hurt really bad?
2. Is it easier to get rejection in that area?
3. How long would I have to wait until I can change it?
4. And can I still exercise when I just get them pierced,or can it simply get infected by sweat?
Thanks.
Comment by Anonymous
1. It really all depends on your pain tolerance. If you have a high or even normal pain tolerance, it's likely you'll only feel some pressure, and maybe some pinching.
2. Rejection in that area isn't too risky, the area doesn't really move all that much, just be careful not to forget they're there!
3. It's different for everyone, a month, maybe. It all depends on how your body heals.
4. You can exercise regularly with them, just make sure to clean them once you're finished exercising!

Deanna - you'd have to make sure they're covered every time you performed, however getting them done on your hip may not be the best idea because of all the moving you'll be doing. As for getting in the water, you'll have to wait a bit because standing water can get inside the piercing and cause problems while it's healing.
Barbie - Just make sure you clean it, and it'll be fine!

You should be fine dancing, just be careful about snagging.
I had bandaid scars for about three weeks, but had to stop wearing bandaids completely. If you still have to wear bandaids, try getting hypoallergenic or latex-free, you may be allergic. Try switching up how you place them, also. If you're not wearing them and are still really concerned, talk to your piercer or a dermatologist.

I got a dermal under my eye Friday (today is tuesday early early morning).
It seemed my experience was off...Watching videos they all seemed quick. Mine was done with a punch, and I obviously couldnt see what was happening but he seemed to be struggling with that even and there seemed to be a peice of my skin that wouldnt come off or somthing and he just pulled it off. (Not sure how normal that is or not.)
He spent I would say 5-10 minutes trying to get the base/foot of the dermal under my skin. He said he couldnt get it deep enough. It was done, whatever. And later looking in the mirror I noticed it didnt sit flush with my skin and it stuck out a little.
Today it looks like its sat closer now but my biggest concern is, under the gem I am almost certain I see the foot of the dermal. I dont know how normal that is. It seems like its not normal to me. It was sore the first day but it doesnt hurt, its not red, it looks alright. But I just swear I can see the metal...
Is that just part if the healing? Do I have a big chance of rejection? Is there anything I can do to help it if somthing is wrong?

So about a week ago (two at most) the lower dermal (sits about naval height on the hip) started to crust arounnd the sides of them gem. Orignally i thought this was the skin growing around the dermal like we're all told they will do, so i removed it from the sides of the gem. The next day, the crust was back. I realized this must be piercing "crust", basically forming from the piercing leaking whatever it is most of the leak at least once. Thought, um okay. Well the dermal started to get about a nickle sized red circle around it and would have the crust on the sides every day for the past week, even though i was cleaning with water and a Q-tip.
I texted my piercer photos and told him about what was happening and he told me to come in. Scared of infection and also losing my dermal i went into my piercer today. He squeezed it and a small amount of puss came out, he said the dermal needed to be removed and there was a pretty good chance of infection, the longer i wait, the worse it would get. So i let him remove it as he saysihe could put it back in within a week most likely. The removal was simple, a tug and it popped right out, no worse than getting it pierced, in fact maybe a little better. However, he had to squeeze all the crap that was under the piercing out of my skin and even needed to use a needle to drain it! OMG that was 10 times worse than any of my piercings or the removal.
I believe the infection was my fault for bumping it every day against my desk, and/or swimming in lakes/rivers. Not to mention this is a high move area.
Would anyone that went through all that continue with my 5 dermal project and hope i take care of them better. Or remove the one that is left, and will look badass with the other 4?

i want to get another piercing but my ears are small and i dont really have anymore room lol thinking about getting my lip done but i really dont want to damage my teeth - do lip piercings chip your teeth or is it only if you hit it by accident?

I have a lot of friends with lip piercings, and it all depends...one of my friends lip is disgustingly swollen on the inside. and the metal does scrap your teeth a bit but if you don't mind the feeling then go for it, but if you're the type to get chills when you file your nails or something, you might want to reconsider it....also, i wanted to get my lip pierced for the longest time, and i actually did pierce it despite what my parents said, and then i thought about some things, such as; when i kiss a guy, do i really want a piece of metal in the middle of it? and i also thought of the actresses that inspire me, and i said to myself "they are so naturally beautiful" and i just decided i didn't want any piercings in my face (because the metal will get in the way of my natural look). anyway, do what you please, this is just my opinion
