Lip Tattoos
June 2nd 2008 16:13
Lip tattoos are generall on the inside of the bottom lip, but occassionally on the inside upper lip. These tattoos are pretty unique and unusual, and for the most part people who get inner lip tattoos, want to have one word, very small phrase, or a few numbers tattooed in a fairly hidden area. Many people categorize lip tattoos as "hardcore" tattoo, but personally, it's just another tattoo.
Usually those who want inner lip tattoos get very personal or highly offensive words tattooed. For the most part, you probably won't see to many "sweet" or "cool." Most people tend to get words that they don't want to advertise to the general public. Another common reason that people get lip tattoos is for pure ego; to go to a friend and say, "hey dude I got a lip tattoo. Wanna see?" makes you "cool" because you got a tattoo in a very unusual spot.
Lip tattoos are iffy in terms of will it stay or will it fade away... Although, typically, inner lip tattoos fade, there are cases where the tattoo will be fine upon first application. But usually, you'll need to go in for a number of touchups if you want the tattoo to remain permanent.
As for the pain of a lip tattoo... Well, like any tattoo the actual pain will vary among your pain tolerance, but surprisingly, most people say that the getting tattooed in your inner lip is not as painful as other locations.
As for aftercare of lip tattoos, all you need to remember is basic mouth wash. You need to rinse your mouth before and after you get the tattoo, as well as after meals and after smoking. You want to hold off eating for a few hours after the initial tattoo, as well.
But, in general, lip tattoos should not be treated any different than any other tattoo. Make sure to find a reputable tattoo shop and a reputable tattoo artist. And remember that lip tattoos are like regular tattoos, in regards to the thiner the line and the closer the letters are together, the more likelihood that the tattoo will fade and become unreadable after time.

-The pain: I've been told the closer to the teeth, the more it hurts, is this so?
-The fading: Does anyone know a statistic on how often fading is an issue? I just don't want to spend the money if I don't get to keep it without a bunch of touch ups.
-Has anyone heard of lip tattoo mis-haps? Like can the needle go through or anything of that sort?
-What's normally the healing time?
Thanks!!

Kike, you will need to get it touched up as needed.
Anonymous, I'm not sure what your saying exactly. I'm assuming that you just got a lip tattoo.

I would really like to get a lip tattoo of my boyfriends name, as i do not want it in a place that too many people will know. I have wanted one for a long time but never known what to get, and i want his name on me somewhere so i thought this would be a good place.
Will the tattoo swell, if so how long for???

Bianca, it'll probably be swollen for a little bit, but saliva is one of the best cleansers and healers, so it'll heal fast, but more than likely fade fast as well.

Becca, they don't always fade, but about 90% of the time it will. I don't think it's worth it. It's like throwing away $50.

1) no most places will NOT touch it up for free because theres a high risk ur body will push it out that week therefore they dont gaurentee their work
2) its not like u get it touched up every yr or so; touch ups would have to be made likely that month; may i mention the incredible discomfort of holding ur lip open, drooling& feeling like the needles going through ur lip.
3) i got mine done last week for free since i got other work done with it,im very happy with it however it has begun to fade. it hurt like a bitch to get done&i have no intentions of paying or getting it retouched
Comment by Anonymous
If you've been reading these comments from the top like I have been for a while now, you would see that most of the concern people have voiced about touch ups is not about the pain.
In many cases they're wondering how many touch ups will be required to keep it from fading. Some are asking about cost.
I realize you have the right to state your opinion and that's what this site is for but may I suggest two things first?
1. Read before you comment
2. Comment in a kinder way. And if you're so bothered by people's questions.. ignore them because you obviously already know the answer right?

Lips tattoos are goign to fade, so it's jsut a matter of time. I personally, think the're a waste of money, but to each is his own. Ya know?
Also in regards to your comment to the guy from the 12th, he never said anything about pain. He seemed to me just to coment about the fading and touchups.

Rinsing is good mouth hygiene either way, and should be practiced. Used alcohol-free mouthwash

I have a friend who has had his lip done for 4 years now, and its still in immaculate condition and has never needed to be touched up. My own lip tattoo faded slightly in the first week but has not faded any more since and i've had it done nearly 6 months.

That is, how long will it swell up, if it swells at all?
I'm waiting till I'm 18 (a little over a year!) to get mine with my best friend and because my parents won't let me, I'm just going to get it when it's legal here.
I've thought extensively about it. No turning back.

Anonymous 2, healing is usually pretty quick because of the saliva in your mouth. Swelling is just for a few days. It's good to wait until you are of age, especially if you're parents tell you no. You don't want to go behind their back.

as far as fading, your artist will most likely touch it upp for free.

about a month later I got it touched up, as recommended by my tattoo artist. that one hurt wayyyyyyy more, I actually teared up a bit on it. Once again, it faded quite a bit in the first couple of days. My tattoo artist also said not to get more than one, maybe 2 touch ups because it will scar up the inside of lip if you do it more. I've had mine for a little over a year, and its still there and you can still read it. I've had a lot of people say it was a waste of money bc no one can see, but thats why I did do it, it reminds me to live everyday to the fullest
Comment by Anonymous
Also how bad is the swelling after its done?
Comment by Commander_Venus
* It took 5 minutes to do 7 letters.
* It didnt really hurt at all, just a minor discomfort (although its maybe not a good idea for a 1st time tattoo - you dont wanna be flinching when the needle touches)
* There was no swelling afterwards, it seemed to heal almost immediately.
* Ive had mine for over a year and it hasnt faded at all - although Ive been told wheter it fades or not depends on the individual.

I do agree that one shouldn't get something just because someone else has it. Be original and not a copycat.

Keep in mind shorter words are better, as they can be tattooed larger and have a slightly better chance at not fading to the point of disappearing.

BUT if you HAVE to get one, at least make it interesting... i'm sick of seeing stars, hearts, butterflies, flowers, chinese symbols, whatever. and skip the stamp tramp... the girls who usually get those are too fat for them anyway.
Comment by Bgal
dont worry about touch ups untill they are needed and if you decide you dont want them its easy not tohave them, the tattoo is not visible unless shown so its not a big deal right?
im definately getting mine done regardless of touchups or fading or pricing.

Wheezy is a longer word for a lip tattoo, so it would have to be squished closer together, meaning bold really wouldn't make much of a difference,

I have been in the navy for over a year now but I never recall them checking my lips at MEPS. They definitely check every other part of you but no one will see your mouth until you are already in boot camp and are getting your initial dental work done.
Once your out of boot camp your allowed to get any tattoo non gang or violence related as long as it doesn't show in uniform. I've had 5 tattoos done since I've joined (including my lip), and the military doesn't know about any of them.
Hope that helps.

I'm 100% going to get my lip tattooed, just don't know what to get yet but I'm sure it'll be something stupid, just to say I have done it. I wasn't planning on posting here but Whitney, as helpful as you are (and great at replying!) doesn't seem to have a clue..
-Lip piercings, just take them out before the tattoo is done. Even if it's not in the way, pulling your lip down for 5-20 minutes the piercing will just get uncomfortable. If the piercing is new, wait until it heals because your lip will already be in "shock" from the piercing and the tattoo will have less chance of healing.
-I would suggest getting a lip tattoo done when getting another tattoo (to save money) but if you're just getting the lip tattoo, it should cost no more than minimum price. That said, I know a few places who refuse to do them because it's not guaranteed to heal, they have to play with your mouth and it's bloody awkward to tattoo.
-All these people saying 14,15,16 year olds WILL regret their tattoo, quit generalising, i got one at 15 with my best friend of the time who screwed me over BIG TIME, I'm 24 now and LOVE the tattoo. Just don;t get one if you're prone to regret.
-With ANY tattoo, there are no guarantee's of permanence. I do not hold red, white or certain brands of black on any part of my body, they just fall straight out. THAT said, almost every place will offer one free touch up so i/you can get stuff fixed.
-If you are paying for your lip tattoo, they will most likely offer 1 free touch up, because generally if they arent willing to do a free touch up, they will just refuse to do it in the first place. I'd suggest if you're getting many tattoos to just get it touched up when you get other tattoo's done.
-Any foods/drinks high in acids will fade your tattoo faster. and the drier you can keep it, the better.
-As for getting it to fade faster (for people like the military guy) there's not a lot you can do. Getting a tattooist to tattoo over it without any ink and over work it, might be worth a shot, as it will create a new "scab" and as it heals should draw some, if not all of the ink out (depending how much is left)
-The depth and speed at which the tattoo is done will also play a big part. I have also seen a lot of people saying half has stayed and half faded. This does occur naturally but the artist could also play a part, if they worked at an inconsistent speed or depth or didnt top ink up enough, that could cause parts to fade more than others too.
I'm not sure anyone is going to bother reading this whole post but I hope it helps someone!
Weather it fades or not, I can't wait to get mine done!

i have had my lip tattoo for almost 2yrs now and its still running pretty solid. its all about the artist that does it and how deep they go when tattooing when it comes to fading. generally lip tattoos wont last over 5 yrs, its rare for them to last any longer than that.
as far as the needle going through the lip, its nearly impossible. when tattooing the gun and needle are set to go a certain distance into the lip, eliminating all possibality of the need going through.
lip tattoos are good for your fist tattoo because the pain isnt quit as bad as a normal tattoo but you can still get a feel for it as if it was. and its not forever so theres really no regrets.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU ALL!

Caring for the tattoo:
* Keeping the mouth dry for the first 3 days is vital, the reason a tattoo will fade over the first week is because the ink has leaked, not because it has faded.
* Keep eating and drinking to a minimal, if you have to drink anything, make it water.
* NOT PLAY WITH IT, if you suck on your lip, lick it etc. It will move the Ink and it won't stick.
* Receive touch ups asap after healing. Again, it's making sure the ink is settled and will stick.
IF you follow these steps for at least the first 3 days of the healing process, it will help reduce the chances of fading.
Another thing. Your design needs to be simple. The skin in the lip has a different elasticity to the skin on your arm for example.
This means the skin doesn't come together as well to hold the ink, making it blurry and hard to read.
The larger and more simple the tattoo, the longer it will stay readable.
Please have your information correct before posting.

is it more likely for it to fade unevenly than for it to fade in unison?
