Jailhouse Tattoos
December 20th 2008 17:35
Jailhouse tattoos are those that are typically practiced by prison inmates on one another. In so e cases you will hear them referred to as finline, single needle black, or grey line tattoos. For the most part, jailhouse tattoos are in which one needle is used to create a fine line outline.
Jailhouse tattoos are usually composed of religious iconography, voluptuous women, and various gang symbolism and affiliation.
Common jailhouse tattoos include tears falling from the corner of the eye and spider webs on the elbow. The tears commonly represent that the person has killed someone, someone close to the person has died, or an overall gang affiliation. The spider webs have a varied meaning, but typically, they are representation of the Aryan Brotherhood, which is a racist organization; others believe that the spider web tattoos represent a ring for every year in prison.
Most jailhouse tattoos are some representation of a gang affiliation or a particular crime that has allegedly been committed.
Tattooing is illegal to perform in prisons, but that doesn't stop the inmates from practicing the art of tattooing. Usually, the practice is done underground, using makeshift materials such as the shaft of an ink pen.
There are many severe limitations with authentic jailhouse tattoos, but at the same time there are many wonderful examples of tattoos that have been done in a prison.
And, on the other hand, where most people say jailhouse tattoo to represent a tattoo done in a prison, many use the term in a derogatory sense to refer to a bad tattoo that lacks sophistication.
