Temporary Tattoos - Henna
April 8th 2009 18:52
Henna tattoos are an older form of temporary tattooing that doesn't require anything to be permanent, hence temporary. Basically, henna is formed from a plant and when mixed with certain variables, it creates a dye that will stain your skin for up to three weeks, depending on the location of the tattoo.
You don't even have to go to an artists to do your henna tattoo, you can make your own henna paste, by mixing together a few ingredients, but you want to make sure that you prepare the mix about 24 hours before you're ready to use it, because you have to give it time to cure, so to speak.
You can find information about how to make and apply henna paste, HERE. There are plenty of tips and easy to understand instructions for making your own henna. The article even has PLENTY of pictures of henna tattoo designs so that you can see what all other people are doing.
Just remember that no matter whether you do your own henna tattoo, a friend does it, or you get it professionally done, you need to make sure that what is being used is an authentic henna versus black henna, which contains dyes that are used in black hair dye.
Authentic, natural henna is safe, whereas black henna is not.
Natural henna powder has a hay or spinach odor and is an earthy green/khaki color; it will leave a red/brown stain on the skin. Anything other than that is either stale, contains dye, or not henna. You want to make sure that whoever designs and applies the henna paste to your body knows what ingredients when into making the paste. If they do not or if they give you some complicated ingredient, you don't want to use that paste.
