Why Can't Women Get a Tattoo While Pregnant or Nursing?

April 27th 2009 18:18
It's not recommended that women who are pregnant or nursing get a tattoo, which can be frustrating when you are in that situation and you really want a tattoo... Well, you're better off listening to the tattoo artist and waiting.

Basically, when a woman is pregnant or nursing, everything that she puts into her body can affect the baby, so when she gets a tattoo, or even a piercing, the woman is risking a possible allergic reaction or infection that can potentially be passed down to the baby.

When the immune system is lowered due to an infection, allergic reaction, stress, or any other irritation, the woman is not able to fully protect the baby because her body is working harder to protect itself and not the baby.

The risk is small, but it is still there. So, in order to best protect the unborn child, it is best that the woman not get a tattoo while pregnant or nursing. It is much easier to just wait a few extra months to get the tattoo, than to potentially risk the life of an unborn child.

Most artists will not tattoo a woman who is pregnant, but you will find that a few tattoo artists will tattoo a woman if she is less than three, or so, months pregnant. No matter what stage the woman is in her pregnancy, the potential risks are not lowered, is even if the artists is willing to do it, that doesn't meant that it is necessarily the safest option to choose.

i thought it would probably have something to do with increasing the risk of infections

i think pregnant women are harder to treat if they do get ill, as many medications can affect the unborn baby

best to stay as healthy as you can during the experience i guess!

It does have to do with infection risks... And, like you said it is much harder to treat a pregnant or nursing woman than a non-pregnant woman because everything goes to the baby.

I had heard to never be inked while pg but this is the first that I have heard of not doing so while nursing? I guess it makes sense??? but that is killing me! baby is only 8 months and I am set for my next two and she will nurse until at least a year. what I am having a hard time understanding if you really really know and trust your artist is there really a fear of infection from dirty equip or ink or is it just fear of bad reaction? please explain

It's always best to wait until after nursing. It's your choice, but it's going to be a risk. Just remember it's your body and your baby's health that would be at risk.
